Greetings! Im a 1st timer so please go easy!

As you may know, beetle engines are also flat4 and as i need more power, it only makes sense to fit a Subaru lump in my bug! I was thinking of a 1.8 Turbo OHV.

The Questions I have to ask!
I know bugga all about Subaru engines.
-would you reccomend it?
-How much to pay for a decent engine?
-Where to get it fitted in london?
-Roughly how much to pay?

By the way, There is a guy selling such an engine for £40 with all the parts. Is this a good deal?

I know bugger all about this so I'm going to be no help but here are some thoughts.

1) Bug is rear engined rear wheel drive, Impreza's are front engined AWD (or 2wd ?), the gearbox etc isn't going to be oriented the correct way ? driveshafts / propshafts etc are all going to be wrong sizes.

2) Impreza's are all water cooled, you'll have to fit radiator, water pump, etc etc blah blah

3) After all that hassle, you're going to end up with a 1.8 boxer engine in a chassis designed for substantially less BHP. So you'll have to do all the suspension / brakes etc.

4) This sounds like a lot of hassle for no real gains to me .. wouldn't you be better of saving your cash and buying a Porsche Carrera 3.2 ? or doing the job properly and dumping a Rover V8 in or something ?

Oh dear!!!! Seems u guys underestimate us Aircoold people!

Ive got a full roll cage, stripped interior, close ratio shifter,full koni all the way round, etc etc etc and a beefed 1.7 full race spec engine already.

You would be surprised how popular the scooby conversion is in the Beetle scene! Just wanted some insider info.

 

KONI suspension - must be serious

Using Xmas cheer to decide this isn't muppetesque, from my dim and distant past, an easier conversion for a bettle is an old Porsche 911 engine. Actually fits remarakbly well, except lose space behind rear seats, older ones even use the same engine mounting points.

Friend in the mid-late 80's ran a red bug with a 911lump in - major fun, incredible q-car But being the 80's the car also had the biggest, tacky bodykit and whale tale spoiler a la 3.0 RS looked almost as bad as a Ford RS

I subscribe to Volksworld as I'm restoring a 1970 beetle at the mo and a few months ago they featured a Beetle that had been fitted with a scoob engine. Can't remember the details about the installation but it was severly slagged off the following month by some of the readers.

 

Those who slag off, are too pompus~!

They like things the old way.

I just like the character of the Bug, and want more and more power! What sounds better. A type4 porsche lump, that only a few people can service. OR. A watercooled engine that'll be more economical and easily serviced. Gotta love the sound of that Dump vavle!

 

Yes, it is traditional. But then Im going beyond convention and cant see the point of having a huge engine that delivers relatively little power for the money it costs.
A professionally built 1600c standard Bug engine built by John Maher costs £3000 upwards. How much for a secondhand Scooby lump? Nuff said.
