Hi guys

I know this has been done to death in the past but Search is still down and I want to check my memory.

I'm going to power Engineering tomorrow to have their T75 exhaust system fitted to my P1. I can see myself being tempted to do some other stuff at the same time. In particular the Blitz stainless steel induction kit looks cool but I have read bad things. My understanding is:

1. Induction kits will lose low down torque but gain something in the high end (unattractive for everyday driving better for track).

2. the Blitz gets slagged off for causing MAF failure (I am mechanically illiterate so I have no idea what that is). Does this apply to the P1? Does it still happen? It seems odd that PE would sell a part that is proven to cause problems.

3. Induction kits make a cool/stupid/annoying noise. Comments please on this. I'm not looking for a noise. I'm looking for an excuse to spend money....no I don't mean that....I'm looking for max performance.

4. Is the K&N induction kit better, is there less chance of MAF failure?

5. Should I get an ITG or K&N panel filter instead?

Avoid the Blitz - its filtration is not very good and it has been known to cause MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor failure. With the induction it won't be covered under warranty either (approx 400 quid replacement I think). Yes it will effect your P1.

They probably sell it more for the cars without a MAF where there is less chance of it causing probs.

I'd play safe and go for an ITG. If you must have induction the K&N 57i seems safest so far - no known failures as yet I think.

Thanks Boultsy. I ended up going for the K&N panel, but now I'm wondering whether it is dangerous to MAF because it is oiled. I guess I'll find out in due course.

Yeh just check for goo in the bottom of the air box every month or so I guess. Still unsure myself (ITG or K&N panel). MY02, and want to get it on the rollers before I put one in, be interested to know how you get on with it, keep us posted if u can.

I believe the oil from the K&N only causes problems if too much was applied after cleaning. Many times after cleaning the filter people over-saturate it and the excess ends up on the MAF element. Really only a very small amount needs to be applied to the tops of the pleats, and if the filter is allowed to set for a short time it will disperse throughout the material. When properly re-oiled I haven't seen K&N filters cause any problems for the MAF. That has been my experience anyway, good luck.

What kind of performance gains are we talking about here (for the ITG filter)? Just curious, as I will probably be getting one soon.

 

Hi Tony, not sure. That's what Iam aiming to find out when I put mine on the rollers, before (STD MY02) and after, can't see it being much on it's own though. I think it would be interesting to see the difference on the power graphs between the panel and induction kit aswell, to see how the induction kit effects the low end.

This link shows the results for a K&N panel after an exhaust upgrade, pages 5 and 6(thanks to evilbevel) but the exhaust results don't appear to match those found by scoobynetters with a scoobysport de-cat exhaust, see this discussion on Prodrive BB and related BHP.

hello tony, it's around £50 at Power Engineering for a power test
and that is the extent of my knowledge. Coming from reading they look like your best bet, take a look at the site.
