I thought I would resurect this thread as it may be of interest to some of you.

If you want to stop the paint disapearing from the lower area of your front wings and front doors, these guards work very well, and apparently, although I have never seen them, follow a style which is now (but wasn't at the time I initially posted) like that offered by Prodrive.

Start by cutting two pieces of 1.5mm thick UPVC sheet, or similar, into 9.5" x 3" rectangles.
Mark a line 1.25" up along one short side.
Draw a line from this to the upper far corner at the opposite end of the rectangle, creating a triangular shape, and cut along this line.
Draw around a 2P piece and create corner radii at all corners.
Mark out and drill 2 off 1/4" diameter holes as follows.
Measuring from the 90 degree corner of the triangle at the wide end.
2.5" up 1.9" in from the long adjacent side (not the hypothenuse).
8.6" up 0.7" in from the long adjacent side) not the hypothenuse).
Progressivelly open the holes up to allow the plastic clips (which you have previously removed)on the car to pass through.

To fit to the car, the lower clip on the car, passing through the sill extension is removed by pushing the centre pin in the middle of the clipback slightly, allowing the top hat section clip to be removed.
Push the pin back out so it protrudes above the clip for refitting.
Once the new guard is in position, fit the clip, and tap the centre pin back in.

The upper clip, is removed by turning the screw head centre section anticlockwise, and it should pop out like a camlock fastener, and then the clip can be removed. If the centre portion of the clip will not turn easily, try WD40, or get a very small sharp screwdriver, and dig into the clip to pop the centre section towards you. You should be able to see a circular line on the head of the clip, showing were it splits.
Once removed, fit new guard and push the clip back in position.

Sorry to labour about how to remove the clips, but unless you have taken them out previously, there is every chance you would break them discovering how they come out, and have to buy new ones.

Edited to inform you that B & Q sell polythene/polpropelene type storage container LIDS for 98p in small size, which would make a pair of guards, or larger ones for £1.98 would probably make 3 or 4 sets of guards.
The lids are in dark green or dark blue.

Or you could buy black mud flap material from the rallying type retailers, Demon Tweeks etc

The other make' of this design of mudflap costs approx £360 per square yard.

For the people that find it hard to visualise, try cutting up an old mouse mat, and that is pretty much what the P1 flaps are like, Technical Eh!

Another cheapscate idea from ...

Of course there are a few problem with this. Primarily mudflaps look crap. Home made mudflaps probably look even worse (is that really possible).

Question is, which is the worse of the two evils, mudflaps or stoneships ?

I am seeing evidence of this now on my DBM any chance you made a couple of spares? Obviously I'd reimburse you for materials, erm 50p?

Oh and I resurrected this posting for the mudflap aware in response to their question.

 

MTR - sounds good, do you have any pictures you can post? I am finding it a little difficult to visualise.

Why not bring a few sets along to the Northern Meet IV, or a few sets of instructions? I'd like to see what they look like and then may even part with cash. (Stranger things have happened , but not often...)

Could be onto a little earner here, depending how much of a pain in the bits they are to make?

This sounds strangely familiar!
We have done a very similar thing for the P1 to go with the 18" wheels. They are fitted to P1 PVP as featured in Autocar in the 16 & 30 August issues.
At the moment we have no plans to sell them......unless there is significant demand.

Not all mudflaps look bad saw an STi IV couple of months back in Cold Steel Blue with red PVC rally type mudflaps on it Personally I thought it looked quite good, similarly Evo's with Ralliart mudflaps on don't look too bad.Any one know a way of fixing some of those PVC type mudflaps to the car without drilling the body work though?

Sorry MTR but Prodrive had them on P1 PVP back in April; so don't rush for the patent.

What are you playing at? As an ex aircraft engineer myself (Damn....I was trying to keep this secret) what on earth are you playing at quoting imperial measurements to 4 decimal places? As you will (should) be aware, if you can drill holes in 1.5 mm PVC with a hand held Black & Decker, to this tight a specification you are not a human, but in actual fact one of the most accurate hole drilling machines on the planet, and must have internal cooling which ensures you stay at a constant 20 Deg C.

To the rest of us mortals, if you can hit MTR's measurements to within 0.5 mm (.02" approx.) you are doing VERY well (and should quit your jos in IT and take up engineering - only kidding!!). More likely you will be able to hit +/- 1mm (0.04" approx) and if it does not fit, get a bigger drill bit!!!!

Just pointing out that it had been done a few months earlier.

When I saw them on P1 PVP I considered doing a set for myself but have since being looking at rally style mudflaps.
Winter is coming so I'd better get a move on.

whats going on?
I read this post a while ago and remembered your excellent instructions for making P1 WR style mudflaps.
I'm thinking about making some but it seems you have edited out all your bits from this topic. I thought you didn't mind "sharing your idea for free"? or perhaps you're worried about being sued by Prodrive!!
Whatever the reason it's a shame as I think they could catch on.

I have a prototype pair of the "plasflectors" as described in detail by our engineering friend, which he fitted for me incidentally, and they work a treat.

I commend them to the house.

 

Any ideas where to find suitable plastic, as I have the template (cheers for that MTR!) but no clue what material to use. Looked in Homebase but couldn't find anything.

I'd never make a decent member of that scrapheap challenge thing.

Haven't ask any questions because my stupidity would be all too apparent. If I wait long enough someone covers the topic anyway!

Back to the original topic: thanks MTR, just read the original post and it looks like I'll be visiting B&Q this lunchtime.

For what it's worth, I've found MTR's advice excellent, and I know the amount of effort that went into Northern Meet IV must have been quite a bit.

I'm not going to get deeply embroiled in this, but welcome back.
