Default '97 type R clunking from front of car?

Hi I am new to Scoobies and have just got a type R from Japan. I have read a few of your threads on noises from the front but just need your advice.

When pulling away from a junction with the steering wheel about a quarter to a half a turn to the right or to the left and normal acceleration I get quite severe clunking from the front. Feels like the driveshafts are going to fall out.

Is this the notorious noise I should expect or is it (as I suspect) something that needs further investigation?

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Yea, sounds like the DCCD has been wound forward, try winding it all the way back, as the further forward it is, the more clunking it makes.

Well it is set all the way back which displays NO green light? I have to move it slightly forward for the first green light to illuminate? Is this right? Maybe I'll try it in different positions to check.

Thanks for the answers so far. This does seem to be quite a friendly forum.

you should have a green light when wound all the way back. It does sound like dccd is in wrong position for slow movement. try putting it on first light and see what happens

Okay, just so I can check. How many lights should I have. i.e. how many greens, how many oranges etc. Thanks

There are 5 visable lights,
Position 1 wound all the way back = no lights.
position 2 wound forward 1 notch = green light
Position 3 wound forward 2 notches = orange light
Position 4 wound forward 3 notches = 2nd orange light
Position 5 wound forward 4 notches = 3rd orange light
Position 6 wound forward 5 notches = 4th orange light with LOCK inside it.

When position 1 with nolights, you should NOT get and horible noise/bang.

IMHO all above advice is spot-on.

If you need tech help/action call David at Welcome to the API website

He can sort you out. Could be something quite simple rather than box out, dccd off etc.

There are loads of bushes under the car, i.e anti roll bar bush, suspension component bush etc, bushes are hard rubber mounts which absorb vibrations and shock waves, they can perish with age or split causing them to knock or bang under the car.

going back to the DCCD, I'm pretty sure on my type R if the DCCD is wound all the way back on mine it still displays the bottom green light on the dash?? Haven't driven it for about a week so can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure the bottom green light is always on and I have checked that its wound right back.

Went for rolling road today and the guy there reckons my car has a LSD on the front diff causing the strange feel at low speeds. As for the lights there must be a difference between early and later type R dash lights.

I was under the impression that type r's have a visious LSD on the front and a mechanical LSD on the rear?

I wouldn't say that mate! I'm new to the Scooby scene myself and pretty much everything I know so far has been from people in the know on this site.
