I am looking into getting my first scoob shortly & have read about leaving your car running (turbo timer etc) when you park up to help prevent turbo damage.
Does this only apply if your stopping for a long period of time? (car cools down) what do you do when you stop for just a few minutes e.g. getting petrol etc.

This should probably be in the muppet forum but I was just wondering.

After a short blast or drive I let it cool for around a minute, if I have been using it quite heavily I let it cool down for over two minutes

I always plan my journey so I have a couple of miles driving off boost, I also let it idle for while when I arrive, the sort of get everyone out of the car etc then hit the turbo timer & remove keys & then alarm, 45 second wait with car whilst it shuts off, of if I'm in a busy car park & feeling playful hit the turbo timer & then the alarm and slowly walk off to see how many people tell me my engine is still running

From what ive heard, well you know all those bits under the bonnet
well theres a bit i think thats called a turbo (TECNICAL) its got some sort of fins/propeller inside it and they spin oil around inside it and when you cut the juice the fins stop spinning thus leaving really hot oil still on them THUS car gets ILL.

I hope I havent made that too hard to understand being very tecnical myself as you have probably now realised.

Well what you all do when you get petrol? sit in your car for a few mins and let people cue up behind you, ha that must **** people off, must wonder what the hell your sitting there for.

Mind you it will give them a few minutes to look at the scoob!!

either a) fill up the car while the turbo-timer is still running (done this several times - ?perhaps I shouldn't)

or

b) fill up BEFORE going on a long run - a tank full of petrol should last 4 hours or more, so u should be taking a driving break anyway when at the petrol station..... take the break, let the turbo cool down, then fill with petrol (perhaps that's another built-in WRX safety feature?)

Actually I though Scoby answer was the simplest for a while on why turbos get trashed from hydrocarbons coking inside it! (Spot the person that work on an oil refinary for a year)

When it comes to filling up, always before the journey and if it is during a long journey then I either drive off boost for a long time or have even been known to sit in the motorway services car park with the engine running and the car plinking for a few minutes.

stiscooby, do you realise that this advice is only immediately after using the turbo hard, like thrashing or coming straight off a motorway? Going through town for a couple of minutes is as good as, so you don't need to let it cool every single time.

If you knew that already, sorry!

What I usually do is get petrol in a station in an 'off-boost' area (e.g. 30 or 40 mph limit), or if on a motorway/dual carriageway slow down to about 60mph a couple of miles before the petrol station. You should be OK if you slow down at the 'services -- 1 mile' marker and then leave it for around 30 secs when you get to the pump (enough time to detach mobile phone headset, turn off stereo, open fuel cap, etc.)
