Rang Greenlight "Motor Specialists" for a car quote today - it went like this.
"Age"

"Occupation"
Teacher
So after apparantly qualifying for their consideration for a quote, I was then asked for the make of car - Impreza Turbo.
"What is your cheapest quote so far ?"
Around £400
At which he laughed and said I must be joking - you wont get that at todays rates - they are always getting stolen - it'll be about £650.
I said I lived in the depths of Suffolk, have 34 years no claims bonus and have passed the RoSOPA Advanced driving test and you're telling me you can't get a quote under £650 ?
"No way" he said. (He had not taken any other details other than age and job and had not attempted to get a quote.) I said not to worry as I already had my current policy renewal at £418 and another quote for £434 (19b).
Why do they bother advertising in True Grip if they can't offer competitive premiums or even courteous service ? Or are they just trying to rip off enthusiasts ?
MY ADVICE IS DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A PHONE CALL TO THEM !!!!

hmmm, well on the flip side of the coin, i found GreenLight to be the best informed , and the most competitive insurance that i rang, hence i`ve just spent £760 with them on my new premium

i would recommend these guys to anyone and everyone.

insure.co.uk wanted £1069 when I got a quote off them the other day, even before they'd asked me how many miles I do (30,000), any convictions, etc.

Currently with AXA through AA at £909.

StanS -- no offence intended, but might you be better off going for one of those 'over 50' policies (or do they only do Volvos?) My dad managed to get a quote for a TVR Cerbera, unlimited mileage, *no* no claims bonus, for 750 quid!

 

Looks like I need a new address, renewal 1250 time on the net and the phone took 500 off it!

Puff ..NFU around the same, full NCB. Don't know if it's wifes SP50 or the scousers that do it

Less than 500 and I would think Christmas had come early. Hope it makes you feel less bitter Stan.

I got £535 with 9 pts (3x SP30) but full NCB & Stan has nearly 20 years on me

 

I am currently with Greenlight insurance and have been for several years.I am 27,live in Newcastle have fncb and am currently paying £900 fcomp on a 97 turbo saloon.
I have to agree totally that £650 for insurance is stupid.I think its the case with 99.9% of insurance companys.They rip you off and then a bit more all of the time and always say that they will beat a quote or at least match it (some offer pens/money if they can not) but do you see any of it if they can not,I think you know the answer to that.

I have recently purchased my turbo but before I got the uk car ordered a Jap WRX import from Japan from a good specialist dealer(it fell through in the end and I learned the biggest RIP OFF in insurance EVER was in imported cars) and was HORRIFIED by the cost of insurance which some competitive companys were giving me.They all seemed to be around the £2500 mark (funny that, them all being the same) but did get the price down to £1300 and the funniest being £4000.I asked all the time why the Jap cars are so much more to insure and always got the following answers,
1-insurance group 20,as fast as a ferrari mate
2-all parts have to be sourced from Japan and are expensive(Subaru uk obviously dont get there parts from Japan then)
3-Trees seem to get in the way of these cars
4-Because there just more expensive ok

Have been shopping around today for insurance quotes. Current insurer - Direct Line quoting £540 with 4yrs NCB. Privilege were more expensive unless I was prepared to get into high excess and, (sorry PTMW) but NFU were way off at £750 although their excess was a maximum @ £250 plus I was getting Basic AA or RAC road rescue included.

Even Admiral said that they could not get close to Direct Line's renewal quote.

All the companies seem to be obsessed with the estimated annual mileage & checking on the mods that may be on your Scoob.

If you were treated badly that is bad news, Tony the owner is fully aware of the Impreza scene, my car has been insured with them for the last 3 years, cheapest every year (and I do check).

I have to say that although I've only been with Greenlight since April of this year, I didn't have a problem with them.

I was getting quotes of between £1200 to £4000 for a modified MY99 UK car. A majority of which were around £1800.

They quoted me £825 and they are covering all my extras with a 'like for like' replacement.

Only stipulation was that I have a cat alarm and a tracking device. Funnily enough when I moved (between getting the quote, and getting the car!), they changed the quote to £925, but the mention of a Barrier Deadlock dropped it back down to £825.

Any further modifications to the car, will be covered at 10% of the cost. At least I know where I stand.

Sorry you had a bad experience. There is always one that lets the side down, in all walks of life.

Thanks for the responses.

My renewal quote (as group 17) was with RAC Direct - £418 which allowed mods up to about 10% increase in power (which mine was - approx !)The £434 was with NFU (as group 19 which the latest mods take it to).
I rang NFU after ringing round last time I was thinking of modifying it and was very impressed with their help/familiarity with the car etc etc so I expected them to be the best.
With the "person" at Greenlight (maybe it is just the one ?) we didn't even get as far as modifications !!!
Carl - over 50's policies specify no mods + low ins group cars only !!!!
Mike - maybe your mate Tony should listen to some of the phone conversations and try to reduce the loss of business to people like me - unless they do just want to maintain profit margins rather than be competitive. Its difficult to get comparisons with a negative/dismissive "adviser". More staff training ??
PTMW - no Suffolk meets before Xmas ?? What a dull lot we are - no wonder the premiums are (usually) low in this county !!!!

Yes this all sounds awful, I will think of you when I shell out another years premium at £1300 (unless it goes up next year of course ..)
