I calculated some figures a few years ago. At least seven of them have been backed up in practice.

BHP---MPH
160---125
220---139
300---154
340---160
380---166
420---172
480---180
520---184
550---188
600---193
650---199
700---204
750---209
800---213
850---217
900---222

Those figures are interesting, it does throw into doubt a lot of claims made by manufacturers of old. Eg Vauxhall Senator 3.0 24v doing 150mph but with only 205bhp. The scoobie really must be one hell of a barn door.

Mind you it makes Andy's top speed even more impressive, that is really serious power coming from your scoobie for you 200+mph runs.

The speeds above are based on what could practically be achieved on a 1.3 mile runway such as at Elvington, some manufacturers top speeds are quoted as V max ie unlimited distance to max it out.
It refers to real MPH ie not read from the speedo !

The figures in the table are by calculation, they follow a curve where MPH = the cube root of power x a constant. Its as accurate as I can get it, obviously the types of spoilers, tyre pressures, widths etc will have a contributing effect although fairly minor.

The examples I have seen that correlate are

125 - std sport
139 - std uk turbo 2000
154 - std newage ppp sti
160 - decat/mapped Sti8
172 - my RA in 2003 at elvington after dyno at 440bhp
199 - Lateral performance after dyno 650bhp
210 - my type R, not dyno'd but est'm circa 800bhp before nitrous

Not a scoob but Norris evo ran 204mph with dyno proven 850bhp IIRC

It depends on the actual gearbox's 5th gear ratio, diff ratios, tyre size, rpm limit and obviously where you develop maximum power in the rpm range.

Have a look at the top of your quote, those speeds were worked out for a 1.3 mile runway (ie starting from rest)

but no 2 cars are the same as torque differs so do gearing, tyres, wheel size, altitude, air conditions, weight, wind speed, there are a million factors that can alter a top speed..

Thats incorrect the Lotus carlton had 377bhp, 419lb/ft of torque and could not get beyond 177mph.

Not it is not incorrect... The figures you state are the "book" figures. They are on average 410bhp (cant recall torque), and at least one has been measured at 186mph driven by Bell, they will easily go past 177, I know....

The figures for the Lotus Carlton have always seemed to be all over the place. I was reading in one magazine recently, probably Evo, about that car. They were saying it was hell to try and figure it. The ones they used basically broke long before they got to the book top speed, they struggled to get 160mph iirc.

Struggled to get to 160?!?! My god what was wrong with it?! They certainly dont struggle to get to that speed, far from it, and I have been if a few.

God knows with these cars because it was so long ago. I read something similar to whats already been posted that there were discrepancies in some of the Carlton figures. Testing these kind of maximums on anything other than a bowl is also very difficult without a very long runway. Top speed also has a lot to do with the way the power is produced (revs and gearing etc) so it wont always be the same for all cars with the same power.

Yoool be pretty lucky to get a Senator up to those speeds. In fact i'd go as far as to say no chance.

that's quite interesting, i have sat on the limiter in my 97 wrx a few times in 5th gear, and i estimated the power to be about 340bhp (vf23 turbo maxed out )
