Default Gearbox/driveshaft compatibility

Hello,

Mines an MY98 WRX and since fitting a clutch 2 years ago, there is a very slight noise on overun from the car. I say from the car as it doesnt seem to be speed dependant and doesn't change with road speed.

After inspection the driveshafts don't seem to be as tight on the gearbox splines as what I think they should be.

Are all classic gearboxes compatible with all classic driveshafts?

It could be prop or rear diff, although it only started when I refitted the gearbox and hasn't got any worse since. No noise under acceleration either!

Any ideas?

Mine is a slack fit also (Sti V3) and all is well.

Check the clearance between the entire exhaust length and where it comes close to the static parts of the underbody:

Down pipe to gearbox X member
Center tube to Propshaft center bearing
rear box inlet side to diff subframe on NS right where the driveshaft is.

Graham.

Cheers for the reply Graham!

I was thinking that I may have things slightly out of line and that a tweak may sort it.

Slack fit? I thought I had broken something at first, lol!

Cheers,

Wayne.

Yes, bit disconserting at first. My rears are the same.....

The exhaust pipe (esp if it is a 3'') can just touch and 'humm' on contact when the engine twists under load on its engine mounts. You really need about 10mm clearance to be really safe from touching.
