My99 UK Turbo,only mod is back box,centre decat and panel filter.

Noticed my clutch slipping a little in 5th on motorway,over 80 at above 3000 rpm

This happens very intermittent (1st noticed in February) yet holds steady as a rock in 1st -4th and also in 5th most of the time

I did however floor it the other day in 2nd and 3rd (M3 hassling me ) and noticed that the clutch juddered in a very similar way it does when cold (same as the well documented MY99 judder)

Is my clutch failing or some other problem ?

In my experience of slippng clutches i first notice it in 3/4/5 when putting foot on gas.

Way i test (if buying a car) is to stick it in say 4 or 5th gear and try to pull away from a stansdstiull., this usually shows clutch slip up straight away.

If it is not too bad at all/ just starting then it may not show up this way.

 

It sounds like your clutch is on the way. Can you find someone locally that can be trusted to give you an honest assessment of the situation ?
The clutch is most likely to slip at the point of maximum torque and if you get the car in say 4th gear and put your foot flat on the floor at 2000 rpm with your left foot ready to cover the brake and keep your right foot flat on the floor but at the point of maximum accelleration ie. maximum torque keep your left foot on the brake, you should provoke slip. If you don't you have nothing to worry about and if you do start making plans to replace the clutch before you damage the flywheel

 

I have a MY99 UK Turbo and you have just described the exact same symptoms as mine,it will be intresting to see what you discover

 

What sort of mileages are you both on?

 

The best way to test the clutch is to get to about 3000rpm (3rd gear usually best) and floor it, as soon as accel has stabilised, stab the clutch down and up, the revs will flare as you release the clutch, if they come straight back down as you come off the clutch (and give a thump to the car) the clutch is OK, if they come down lazily, then its FUBAR (or not upto your torque output in the first place).

Mine has just started slipping, but I've been expecting it as It's done nearly 80k (bit different to the 3500 miles I got out of the clutch in my first Impreza!). My local Subaru dealer (SGT) is quoting me around £1200 for a new one fitted (£500 parts, 6 hours labour + VAT). Anybody care to suggest any cheaper alternatives to the factory clutch - I'm not looking for anything fancy, a standard clutch will do. Are there any non-franchise Impreza specialists in the Windsor/Slough/Staines area who's labour may be cheaper?

 

My clutch on my MY00 had only done 38K and started to slip as soon as Bob Rawle worked his magic on it,

my my00 has gone in today at slow-boyracing (south-east) for a new clutch ive been charged £407 all in for a genuine sti 230mm fingers crossed all goes well
