Hi everybody
i new to doing diy mechanics so need some help , i need to replace my front o/s driveshaft can someone tell me what tools i need and how to do it , a step by step guide would be most helpful , my cars a my94 2000 turbo uk wagon, cheers

 

Pretty straight forward. Jack the car up, wheel off.You need to undo the big hub nut, can't remember what size it is, about 27mm I think. Get somebody to put there foot on the brake because it will be tight. Undo the pinch bolt that holds the bottom ball joint and remove it. The bottom ball joint will be tight and will probably need lots of wd40 to loosen it. Once it's undone go under the car and knock the pin out that holds the inner cv joint onto the gearbox. Greetings all, 1st posting as I'm new to Impreza ownership.
I have a couple of questions;

1) In removing the driveshaft, will the gerbox dump its oil on my driveway.

2) I need to replace the inner CV boot, can I do this is place just by removing the bottom ball joint and the strut to hub bolts, will this give me enough room to pull back the driveshaft enough to pull the tripod joint which I take it is retained by a circlip and then slide the new boot over

Any help appreciated.

 

1. No because the stub axle & seal are still in place.

I changed the inner boot using No.2 method but the car was on a ramp. I found it diffcult, messy & it does not do your neck any good. Make sure you don't loose the spring "c" clip.

I think it would be easier to remove the complete shaft & tackle it on a work bench then refit.

Thanks for that, but I think I'll try it in place since I don't have a 27mm socket.

Anyone got any other tips?

 

Thought I should mention it is a 32mm socket you need for the drive shaft nut not a 27mm so dont go buying a 27mm

 

and it depends on what year it is as to wether it will drop it's oil when you remove the driveshaft, the early ones won't the later ones will

Am I right there is a roll pin retaining the driveshaft so just knock it out and it slips off?

How far does it have to move to come free?

 

Correct, knock the dowell pin out and the driveshaft should be free to come off.
