Default Water spray switch under throttle?

Has anyone tried extending their water spray switch circuit to a parallel switch to sit under the accelerator so when giving it full throttle the water spray activates?

Would it be of any benefit?

As far as I am aware the waterspray is activated by the ECU when under WOT or when the intake temps are too high... at least this is how I think the spray on my MY99 works (when the relay doesnt stick on that is!)

I have a Spec D which has a button for activating the water spray on the dash. I think it is only the JDMs which have an auto setting.

My idea is to effectively activate the water spray at WOT without worrying where the button is. Actually, I haven't got around to using it yet, apart from when I tested in in my drive, because I keep forgetting it is there.

Not sure how quickly I would empty the reservoir though

mine would be empty with a run to the shops i think.

I was looking at fitting an Auto version of the intercooler spray to my classic RA which has a manual switch.

Guess I am lucky with my Type R as it has the auto function as well. Currently working on a replacement timer/relay module as my relay has become sticky - which means my tank drains in 4-5 mins... keeps the intact temps down though I guess

Have used a PIC processor to manage the relay control as well as an LED indicator when the spray is active. The time the pump is on is also adjustable which should be a useful feature (possibly ). Just need to test it on the bench and sort out a PCB for it...

Now that sounds like a very nice peice of kit, would there be any chance of maybe making a second one if it works ok.

Thanks
Chris.

This maybe of use if you want to try something different.

50 quid roughly for the kit for that one from AUS, looks quite good though monitoring the air temps etc.

Of course, would be happy to knock up a few once I have completed the testing... had the unit working on the breadboard, just need to knock up a test unit to try out in the car now - this weekend hopefully.

Will keep you informed on progress...

Finally found the time to work out a couple of minor issues with the PIC code and the MOSFET that I am using to control the 12v feed to the pump

Hope to knock up a test version of the board tonight so with luck will have it installed in the car over the weekend. If I get time I will try to sort out a PCB for the design, if not then it will be on Vero...

On my blobeye wagon I used a SPA gauge to use both channel alarm trigger signals to power relays. These in turn opened up power to the 5 sec relay that activates the intercooler spray.
This allowed the spray to happen at whatever setting I wished
eg boost > 1.25 bar AND charge temp > 30 deg C
It meant I could do away with the manual spray button.

I'll try and get it going again on my Spec D but this time to log what happens to the charge temps.

Finally (its been a while) knocked up the test version and installed it in the Type R last Sunday. The unit is based on a 12f675 PIC running at 4MHz. It monitors the output of the ECU/Manual spray switch and when this signal goes to 12v the spray relay is activated for a pre set time (set by a POT between 0 and 10 seconds).

Unit is working perfectly with a spray time of 5 seconds currently. Originally planned to run the spray active LED to the dash but haven't got around to this yet.

The unit has 4 connections, +12v, Gnd, Switched input (from ecu/switch) and output. The relay is rated at 12v DC 10A so is more than capable of driving the spray pump.

If anyone would be interested in a unit let me know.

sounds good, i'm in no wat techie minded, so bare with me lol

I have a wrx and I have managed to source all the parts for an i/c water spray system inc OE buttons.

How would yours work differently from the OE one?

I built my version as the relay in the timer relay in my Type R was sticking on. I believe in the newer cars the timer is seperate to the relay, in my car the relay and timer is one and the same. I could not source a replacement relay to fit in the OEM timer so I decided to make a processor controlled option.

This gives 1 main advantage over the OEM part, I now have control over how long the spray is (0 to 10 seconds). My ECU looks after the spray while driving and I can manually trigger the spray from the other button on the dash - same as before.

eventually I hope to add a temp sensor so the IC spray can be triggered on IC temp but dont hold your breath.

Guys,

please check out my thread in 'General technical' about my STI water spray question.

Basically,

Ive bought the OE sti spray kit but the wires that come from the water pump on the washer bottle have been cut and taped together (theres two of them, + and -.......I guess) on the OE switch there is no wiring plug on the rear just the switch and looking at the rear of the switch are 4 brass pins as in something plugs onto/into it?

Arrrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

p.s how can I wire it up?

do I 'T' the positive to the switch and a live feed then earth the negative?

Thanks
