Default Squeaking from under car

I've got this squeaking coming from under the car - very loud, but doesn't sound serious.

Car runs fine .... kind of like bed springs?

Any ideas? I snapped a fixing lug of the undertray at the last Service about 5 weeks ago - I'm thinking it could be that?? Anything else to look at - I seem to remember a heatshield rattle mentioned, could it squeak?

Generally going over small bumps and non-smooth roads.

I 'think' I even heard it squeak when I started the engine ...... ??

Have you got headlamp protectors? Mine used to squeak every now and then. Also the front bumper, where it's held on just infront of the front wheel. Check for play there, mine also squeaked there until I tightened it up. So check the bumper for play on both sides and see if you can get it to squeak.

If its coming from directly under the car it'll be your exhaust, more than likely a heat shield loose and your exhausts rubbing against it. Jack the car up (when the exhaust is cooled) and try your hand at pushing the exhaust up and down.

Hmmmmmmmm, well maybe you're right there - I am from the school of hands-on Engineering Training ............. the Degree boys with no hands-on are, yes, not getting close to any car of mine

I was taking engines apart many, many years ago ... I have absolute faith in my ability to work on such a simple vehicle as a Subaru Impreza

But this squeak is bugging me

Possibly ARB bushes, especially with all the rain we've had recently..!

Is it more of a squeek or creak..?

It seems to have stopped - got to the 4-post lift and nothing!!

Best way to describe it was like two pieces of wood creaking together ... you know, when you sit on an old chair?

ARB bushes probably - try a shot of silicone spray and see if that stops it.

try to narrow it down get someone to push down on the car while you try to get a fix on where the noise comes from. It does sound like a bush type thing. Best to find out in case it's something likely to let go.

Good luck

a mate of mine had the same prob last week and it got louder - eventually we narrowed it down to that...

my MY00 squeaks as described, its the front bumper on mine... squeaks slightly when i close the door aswell.

during the last service they fitted a new clip on the bumper, now the noise comes from the other side!

i'll fix it when i can be arsed, the bumper is fixe d on tight so it ain't going to fall off :P

Don't think its a suspension noise - doesn't happen on the bounce test.

It's disappeared at the moment .. I'll not worry, my CockLink will protect me

It's your big-end Pete, mine did that just before the engine let go.....

Wish I had ignored your advice and had a CockLink to protect my big ends

The people who rebuilt the engine also said the low grade oil I was using was a contributing factor to the failure

Well, the noise is back ..... sounds like a clapped out old banger!

The squeak happens just the moment after the car has started too - engine mounts??
