Default GOODBYE GTI OR NOT..

Driving through around the the country side lanes around Slough last night (who wants to go through Slough!) when I this Golf Mk4 gets dangerously close up my rear. He got so close up my rear it made me know what it feel like to be Gay. I gave it some and left him, but O'boy did he have fast acceleration!! It was only once I got to about 50-60 where I started to leave him and I did leave him. This must on gone on for about 5 miles. As he turned off, he flashed his lights and said goodbye in a friendly manner which is always nice. My STI is far from the fastest Scoob in the world but I at least thought I could see off a Golf a lot more easier than what I had to. To compare I once had a proper long burn up with a R32 when I was running 305bhp but that another story and scared myself half to death doing it and would never out myself in that position ever again. R32 and I was faster of the mark and mid range we were very equal. Not after any anwsers, just wow

Ps, Who know maybe it was done up to the 9's!?

Are you sure it was a GTi? Could have been an R32 or 4-motion possibly, even those MK4 diesels are rapid.
Either way, if it was a GTi turbo, like any turbo car they can be modded and tuned, depends how much money you have for how much power you get I suppose.
A standard 1.8t isn`t quick enough to stay with an Impreza from standstill or moving speeds I dont think, far too lardy for that

Hello mate,

Defo wasn't an R32 as it didn't have the front spoiler nor the badge. Could of been the 4 motion but no way of telling. Still very impressed with it standard or tweaked with. My teacher has a 06 GTI and wanted to test the difference between my Scooby and his Golf and I left him standing. I know he can drive as he used to do Formula 4. So I had this little opinion of Golfs and then all of a sudden a standard looking one surprises me.

My mate has a Mk4 Gti, the 1.8 turbo model with 150 bhp as standard. It has been re-mapped to 240 bhp!!!

Handles like an absolute bag, but not to shabby at all in a straight line.

Ok mate.

My friend has a GTI in black and is running around 250/300 .He's had loads of work done to the handling. He sometimes goes that way on his way home from work from Reading.

Ok Sweet, I'll keep an eye out. Does it look standard? I couldn't be bothered to post it earlier but when I was going the other way 30mins ago I say a RB320. Looked well tough!!!

My Mk4 TDI looks completely bog standard.

It's a PD150 remapped upto 200bhp with 340lb-ft (sach racing clutch). Handles like the titanic but fun in a straight line. Not sure if it's a quick as my type RA or not when rolling, certainly doesnt feel like there would be much in it. It's a bit tough off the line as you can light it up, in third, in the dry if on a bad patch of tarmac with a heavy right foot.

It's early days yet as I'm still trying to keep the turbo pipes from popping off at the moment

So there are a few *naughty* Golf's out there mine being one. Oh and a bigger FMIC and turbo change should see 280 bhp 450 lb-ft apparently but I certainly won't be looking at that as thats ludicrous in a FWD car.

A mate has a black mk4 R32 that's been debadged to look standard. He's had a fair bit of work done to it including a blower and a large FMIC. It's currently putting out around 430bhp, so is more than capable of surprising PPP STi's.

I can't help but laugh when a modern car that keeps up or 'surprises' a Subaru owner has to be tuned.
Face it, they may not have the performance advantage that they used to enjoy.
Nik.

I agree with Nik above.

Sure scoobs have an advantage on launch (if you can do that properly) but once you're rolling a FWD with less BHP can stick with you, at least until around 100mph.

with my STI as standard (RR@275bhp/240lbs/tq), my mate has a Ibiza turbo chipped to 204 BHP. A 1/4 mile run will see me beat him by 2 seconds, but on the road theres not much in it TBH, i suppose extra weight, transmission losses take effect.

The new wave of hot hatches are extremely good at what they do IMO
