Exclamation What happened when I shifted from 3rd to 4th?

Driving along today, as I was changing from 3rd to 4th (quick ish change at about 5k)... the gearbox engaged (with no effort)what I thought was 4th, I felt a strong jerk as I released the clutch, the gear lever actually popped and stayed in the neutral position between 3rd and 4th, and stuck in what I think it could be 2nd or 3rd gear.

Drove like that for half a mile into town, took a large round about (25mph) the check engine light came on, but everything was fine, the gear lever would move sideways as in neutral but not into gear and it actually felt like I was trying to put the box in gear without dipping the clutch...The check engine light disappeared when I exited the roundabout

I approached a junction and had to stop, this reverted the gearbox to normal and I was able to select gears as if nothing happened; I then tried all the gears and it was fine.

any ideas?

cheers folks

No sure, but i think that is a worn syschro engagement jamming from what I've been told in the past.
Good guy to ask is David at Welcome to the API website They do lots of gearboxes, and Rob there is ace along with David.

you won't get any nonsense there , just simple non rip-off advice.

(makes a nice change?)

Hi Graham

thanks for your post, I am going to try today and see what happens.

API is a bit of far from me, even my prefered subaru specialist is 70 miles away. I am up in Aberdeen

I wonder if a spring from the clutch broke off, stucking the gear lever in neutral....

cheers

'I'll be back'' comment comes to mind. Gearboxes do not self heal!
