Does anyone know the leagal status of drilling small holes in the white area of the number plate say 3mm holes every 20mm to allow air flow to FMIC.

 

No you can't you will get done, move the plate or get a sticker one to put somewhere else.

 

Stick on one are also illegal now. if it was me Id try and attach it to the lower part of your bumper. Having said that depends how often you see the old bill. I ran a small plate on the front for a year without a tug, just another thing to change for MOT tho.

 

I am trying to think of the best thing to do as the plate looks out of place anywhere else, I dont fancy a small plate as thats an invite to get pulled (and taking the police away from catching thieves/muggers etc etc.....)

It would be interesting if someone had a wind tunnel to see the effect of having a plate in the normal location and the air flow...

I also thought about mounting the plate on some spring type device that would say angle the plate down 15 deg when strong wind hits it so geting some extra flow..

 

If you dont use your fog lights very often you could mount a square one over one of them ala evo?

 

If the car is a japanese import there is some legislation that allows you to use a smaller plate with the "bike font"..

 

It is an Import, but from what I understood it is only if the car doesnt have a standard apature to mount the plate...

 

That would make hardly any difference anyway. The FMIC needs a large volume of air passing though it.

 

I think washers and angling the top outward
would be the best bet. Or opposite. Use a standard fan and some smoke to test.
(or fog machine if you have one - wont hurt anything)
