Default how do you know if you need to pay for a retest or not

hi just wondering if i put my car in for its mot and it fails how do i know if i need to pay for another retest or not iam i right in thinking that depending on what it fails on determines if you need to pay for a retest???
if so there must be a list somewhere which tells you whether or not you need to pay for a retest depending on what it failed on.

reason iam asking all this is you might put your car in for its mot and it fails so you take it away and fix it then the mot station might charge you when you bring it back for a retest when they dont have to!!!

Ask the garage that you intend using what their policy is - it's all different and unique to certain outfits.

The regulations can be found here:-

Usually, if you fail and take the car away to get repaired elsewhere they will charge you again even if you take it to them to retest, if you get them to fix it they wont. (well this is how they do it in Northampton anyway) lol Most seem to want to re-charge regardless of what it fails on.
