Broken door handle...MOT failure??

The outside handle on one of the rear doors on the Golf has broken off. However, the door still opens from the inside. I appreciate it could be considered as 'dangerous' condition.
Someone mentioned that this is an MOT failure. As it's due the Test in a few weeks time, do I need to get it repaired before then?

only the front doors have to open from the outside. If there are any sharp bits on the outside that could harm a pedestrian then that could be grounds for a fail. Also a thief might cut themselves on the broken handle and sue you for ££££. I would think that tape over the outside would be sufficient for a pass
But then saw this "A proper examination cannot be carried out because any door, tailgate, boot, engine cover, fuel cap or other device designed to be readily opened cannot be readily opened." here
So they could refuse to test because the examiner can't easily reach the seatbelt.

Apparently its a regular fault
Yet people STILL talk up their build quality and reliability

To be fair, the car is 17 years old with nearly 130k on the clock.
I'm sure your own bodywork has become a bit shoddy since 1990
