Default Jerky, Black smoke popping HELP

Went for a run yesterday and on the motorway the car lost power and became jerky. Pulled on to the hard shoulder and it stalled. The car started again but it was very rough. Made it to Newbury when i had to call the recovery truck. The truck took me to scoobys for you. The guy there had a look and did a code test on it NOTHING, We then went for a spin NOTHING. Set of on my trip and it started again really bad, The car sounded like it was popping when losing power with black smoke . Went and had a look at some cars and when i set of home it started again but then cleared Fine all the way home.

On my way there used about 1/2 tank of petrol to do about 60 miles
on the way back fuel was a lot better.

1996 STI WRX RA run on V Power

Anybody got any ideas why this happened

Thanks Neil

Isn't black smoke a sign of overfuelling?

Probably the Maf.
With the car running disconnect the Maf - if it makes no change then it's almost certainly the Maf

got similiar problem myself at the moment. Mine however is down to a air leak (just fitted fmic) Check all hoses especially the throttle body to intercooler hose as these can come loose (experienced this when I had my top mount) Hose would literally blow off the throttle body letting metered air out to atmosphere, however when you eased of the throttle a vacuum would pull it back on again

My guess is it's something to do with the fuel system. Could be the fuel pressure regulator is on its way out. May be an injector that's stuck open

Probably not MAF though. Usually causes lean running not rich.

Default Breakdown cover what the F***

Right been out in it today and sure enough it did it again. Straight to simpsons of swindon to find out they cant work on imports but they were very helpfull. Called Direct Line (Greenflag) rescue to take me to David Henry Cars to be told it would cost me £126 to take me ther as my rescue only had 10 mile covarage which they used to get to me What a con. Decided to drive it steady and all the way there it was fine. Chap at David Henry had a look and said MAF.Orded one £215. Anyway driving home it started again, i stopped and played with the MAF and hey it sorted it so it looks like it is the Maf

Now i would advise to look at your Breakdown cover as i did not no i had a 10 mile limit and i was using that for them to get to me. Phone call to them will be happening

After all that black smoke Will i need to change/clean anything else which it could have effected

Thanks for your Help

Glad you got it sorted,

Swinton do a very good breakdown cover for very little money, cost me about £40 for the year, this cover's a tow to anyway in the country, well worth the money
