cameras on the M25
I have always wondered if they are active when no speed limit is being displayed?
As I am sure I've seen cars travelling at speed with no flashing go on, or where they just managing to miss the lanes being monitored?!?
A kind of Russian roulette with cameras.

As someone who travels on the road to hell a fair bit (thats the M25 to you non-londoners
)
The speed cameras (variable limit) cover all lanes, and are situated on vertually every gantry between M4 and Guilford (or thereabout, never paid much attention that end).
When the speed limit is enforced, i.e. when the signs show a reduced speed, then the cameras are VERY sensitive and you have very little leniency.
When the speed limit is not displayed then the cameras are not that sensitive at all.....
I have gone through at a speed slightly greater than the limit
A mate of mine says (and I believe him) that he has gone through at over well over 90 without any flashing.....
Very few police patrolling...... just be sensible

Oive seen'em flash. Speed limit of 50 being enforced in the evening. Luckily it wasn't me being flashed.
As far as I know IR cameras have the peizo strips and no white line on the road. Could be wrong tho....

I know the idea of cruise control on a scoob might be alien to some of you but I love it on roads like this. I occasionally do the A1 from Scotland down to borders (when I'm too tired to do the Coldstream run) and its a pleasure in a car which can gain or lose 10mph with a fraction of right foot movement. It also makes long journeys safer as you aren't constantly checking the speedo once you learn to trust it.
Nice to have the choice since you can't push on like a pushy thing from Pushland everytime.

The cameras are active and react to the indicated speed limit, though not all of them are live. Between M3 and M4, only two gantries have live cameras; and it's the same between M3 and A3 - I can't comment on the rest of the route.
When there is no reduced limit posted, they seem to trigger at about 83mph ( which sort of follows the rule of 'Speed limit plus 10% plus 5mph' - which I've heard is the "unofficial booking speed formula" used by some Police Forces)
But don't take this as Gospel !!!

for what it's worth I drove from Junction 26 to 14 of the M25 last night and the radar/laser detector didn't find any live ones (Bel Euro 550) - I thought all of the cameras on the M25 where standard Gatso's?
Oh... and the M4 has only two live cameras inbound to london (from the M25).
