Default Is there a law for how loud an exhaust can be?

last night I went to MK cruise for the 1st time this year.....

Loads of police were there and a guy turned up in a honda with twin exit exhausts...

The police stopped him straight away and gave him a fine saying his exhaust was too loud!

How can the police say that without any equipment to measure the db loundness of and exhaust?

Anyone know

Andy

Technically, I don't think they can. But i'm sure there will be some loophole allowing them to use their own wild judgement!
This judgement doesn't seem to exist for motorbikes with tin cans for exhausts.

There is a law unfortunately, and it does apply to motorbikes as well. It's so difficult for police to enforce, though, because -everybody- on a sportsbike has a rediculously loud exhaust. It's the same as tinted visors technically being against the law (absolutely rediculous), they just don't bother enforcing it because they know it's silly.

Mind you, my friend could set car alarms off with his old SV650 bike.. that MAY have been too loud..

Read in a paper yeaterday that the police will soon be issued with noise meters to enable them to fine exhausts that are too loud on the spot...

There is a law and it will be enforced I'm sure, there are enough vehicles to justify it!

My Impreza has been measures @ 89 dBa in a motorsport environment where noise is critical.
That is a 400 bhp Impreza, 3'' all through decat @ 5000 rpm standing still.
Note the rpm, 2/3rds of the red line- that is the killer part to noise.

Be warned.
Dare I say be responsible too.

limit is 95dB or something like.

If they stop you then it is likely you'll get fine on a bike but they are unlikely to pull you just for the exhaust. Silly italic number plate and loud exhaust + driving like a prat will get you a correction notice at least.

Bikes are easier because the can has to be BS kite marked to be legal, cars don't do that so noise meters are coming in because, understandably familes are fed up of 'crooozers' with loud exhausts driving round and waking their kids up.

5t.
