Was wondering if anyone can help. There a wering noise coming from the near side rear of my classic Type R. I think its probably going to be the wheel bearing but I'm not 100% sure. Is this a common problem? Could it be the output bearing on the diff or do these rarely go? Because it 4WD how do you go about spinning this wheel without taking the driveshaft or prop off? Is it just a case of jacking the whole rear end off and doing it that way? Any help would be great. Thanks.

 

By the way. There's no play side to side on this wheel.

 

Do not jack one end up and run the car!

Is the wirring noise road speed related, fast the road speed = proportional change in noise?
If so i would suggest the wheel bearing.
Issue is finding which one as i presume both are free of play?

I think the diff will be ok as it is the larger type R180 and they are bomb proof with the stock engine and no track days.
If you jack the rear up and dissconnect the prop you might be able to hear/feel the culprit by spinning the rear axle by hand but I doubt it.
Noise travels strangly sometimes in a car.

you could jack the car yp completely, all 4 wheels well clear of the floor, put the car in third and run it. That will give you about 40 mph and while someone does that for you you can walk around the car listening (i did this about 4 weeks ago on my car with a Type R transmission.
Keep the wheels on as the disc's can come loose and rattle which sound really bad!
