Think my gearbox has just gone bang??
MY 03 WRX is running over 300 ftlbs of torque and this seems to have fooked my gearbox up. Ran hard in first gear going up hill, quick change to second and a very loud bang... all I get is crunching from the gearbox now and the gear lever is very very hard to move if at all.
So, if anyone has a new or used gearbox, please can you contact me as a matter of ugency please! my email is: mike@eclipselegal.co.uk.
Many Thanks!

Cheers Rob, I will be contacting all the major Scooby garages tomorrow first thing, just thought I would ask around the community to see if there are any knocking around.
Will the diffs be affected? And will a 6 speed be the preferred choice or should I stick with the 5?

give API a ring
very rought cost is 3k for a built ppg 5 speed ( super strong )
about 2300 for a second hand sti 6 speed ( strong )
diff will be the same with both if you stick to uk spec gear boxes
I wouldnt bother with another std wrx 5 speed but im sure API will set you strieght

Got the Wifes Micras Gearbox fixed by a Transmission Specialist - cost £86!
(I removed it and re-fitted it)
New Input Shaft Bearing and Oil Feed ...... all boxes are pretty much the same
Don't pay silly money, find a reliable local gearbox company operating out of some industrial unit and you will be amazed at how cheap gearboxes actually are to fix .......... even a rebuilt box for an Impreza shouldn't cost more than £750 (thats removed, new clutch, and refitted) - all the parts are readily available.
Like I've said before .......... it is just a car - NOTHING SPECIAL about the Engineering!!!

I've just spoke to API and for a 6 speed UK box I'm looking at £1800 + vat fitted...
There's no point putting in another 5 speed box as I'm sure I'd have that in pieces sonner rather than later...
Is there much point in stretching to a PPG box, or would that be overkill on a 334/310 Impreza?

Ignoring the weight (half the weight of your girlfriend /wife probably) I would choose the 6 speeder, UK or Jap spec and have API fit it as they are a bitch without ramps etc.
The change is smooth, they are super strong (400 lbft etc torque ) and the value of the car will increase!
A fit and forget option.
For performance the ppg is the best, but the whine is there even in helical form.
At 2K ish is a deal even if it brings a tear right now.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm just toying around with the option for 6 speed, or 5 speed PPG..... Not too much difference in price, so which would you go for, is the whine too annoying?
Cookstar, did you get the straight tooth or the other one?

gearbox is straight cut synchro. Mike, you need helical synchro if you are thinking of PPG. You won't need the strength of the straight cut at your power levels and the whine of the straight is sufficient to drive you nuts if you don't love it as soon as you hear it.
Don't forget that anything bought or done here is warranted.

Read the PPG website for claims about power and torque capability. The helical will not be as strong as straight cut, but under most circumstances will be fine as a daily driver /track /1/4 mile car.
Dog engagement is not road car equipment, it is pure race car stuff.

I drove a 5 speed helical synchro PPG car to and from the MOT test centre and didn't even know it was a PPG. That's what convinced me that these are GOOD and not noisy.

PPG website makes no claims as to torque or power capability for the helical/synchro setup at all, so thats no help.
I would have thought this should be listed surely so ppl know what it will take? Anyway, not to worry.
Like most ppl, i wont even consider changing unless i break the one i have.
PPG does say the helical has slightly more noise than factory box, but being as you have driven one and could not tell then that is good enough for me! lol.
As David states above, he has driven one of these and didnt notice any more noise than around normal with it.
What with that and the fact it would obviously be able to take a hammering on the road anyway, would be a good option i think

You aint scrimped on the rest of your car, so why compromise on the gearbox?
Have a read on the PPG webby, it explains all in nice simple terms for ppl like me! LOL.

For me personally i would try to find the extra and get a 5 speed helical cut synchro box via API.
