I had a look at the HPI RS4 at Apexmodels in Crowthorne the other day. I was surprised to find out that you have to buy a starter kit for £60 on top of the price for the model car which is DIY assembly as it is!
The guy in the shop said that this car would only go about 25-30mph and that it was shaft driven so would not have stones jamming it up. I was hoping that it was faster but he did say that you could get a 2 speed gearbox which would lift the top end a little but would speed up acceleration quite a bit. Now I just need to find a decent priced one with all the bits included.

mega stream, thats the 1/8th isnt it? have you got the manual? I sometimes have problems getting mine going but what never fails is take the glow plug out and drop a little fuel doen the bore, then set the needle valve up from fully closed to open about 3 turns, prime the tank, put the glow start on for about 20 - 30 seconds and away you go. Don't be too harsh with the throttle when it starts and try fiddleing with the needel valve while trying to start it if you get no joy. If if it the 1/8th you will need a BIG area to run it because it is seriously quick. I ended up doing mods to mine that aren't shown to make it steer and stop! you need seriously powerful servos because standard ones just aren't up to the job, I also replaced the little 6 volt battery pack with a 7.2 electric car pack to get the volage to the servos so you can steer it and get the brakes to be efficient. Yes its the 1/8th scale Landmax I've got with the GS21R or whatever it is engine.

Its got an instruction book, but I'm having major butt ache getting it working still. Its the engine giving me grief.

Mines got the Escort Cossy body and a Scoob body aswell, looks the nut5 I'm planning on taking it up to the business park where i work at the weeekend (if the model shop can fix the engine tomorrow) Gonna be weird not having a reverse gear though!

I am currently racing 1/10 Electric touring cars.
I use a Team Associated TC3. It's all shaft driven and a complete rocket! does about 35-40 with my current gearing... will do around 50 if i change it but 35-40 is fast enough on a track in a church hall. All this is with a stock motor (24 turns) if you go for modifieds (12 singles) it's possible to do 70... **ckin crazy :crazy:

All in i've spent around £500 on my... ahem... toy. But damn it is quick. Very good fun.

I agree with what someone else has said, once you played with the more expensive kits you don't want to go for a cheap one!

Can anyone help, starting to look for remote control scoob. Scoobynet shop is shut at the mo. Does anyone know where I can get one.

 

Depends what you want and how much you want to pay. If you want to get a tamiya or something like tha you can get them anywhere in model shops. try buying radio race car magazine. I have a 1/8th scale petrol engine scooby wrc with a 2.1cc engine. Lots of fun but I have spent £600 on it!!!

 

argos have one in the xmas gift catalogue for less than £20

Cheam Motors had a few MY01 WRC cars the otehr day when i was in there.

 

If you go ebay you can bid for auctions selling complete built tamiya kits for @ £100


(the electric ones anyway, petrol ones slightly more expensive.)

Just bought one for £16 at Maplins (many branches) - it is awsome fun to jam it in reverse on my fairy liquided wooden floor, opposite lock it and carve round the toaster/slalom!

 

I got a Tamiya one for about £150 including servo's and radio gear. I had to build it myself but being a mechanic I really enjoyed that part, it's not dificult either!

Having seen mine and compared it to others I personally wouldn't go for a cheaper one now, it's down to your own personal choice at the end of the day tho!

The HPI RS4's are pretty cool, they're 'petrol' motors with a pull-start, disk-brake, 4 wheel drive etc... about £280 I think with everything and great fun

 

I got a Koysho Landmax Nitro car 2nd hand on Saturday, superb looking beast, however ficklety little buggers, I've not even managed to get my engine running for more than 30 seconds
Infact I've not even managed to drive it 1" yet stalls

Anyway, with the help from the model shop, I hope to be blasting it it around a some 50mph on Thursday

I'ld look at a tuned electric for ease of use though, this Nitro lark is a pain in the butt!

 

paulpalmer - do they do a 4wd one now? as last time i looked at the big scale ones, was only 2wd, but the porsche was lovely!

 

yes that is the 4 wheel drive made by kyosho with twin disk brakes etc. had it about 3 years now and it is one serious chassis, very similar to the chassis that the world champ buggies use. You can get all sorts of bodies for it and the one I want is the old Lancia Stratos that looks sooo cool

 

My RS4 has a two-speed (adjustable change-up) gearbox... it's ace, even sounds like a 'proper' car changing gear... I think it goes about 40mph in second... that's really pretty quick, I don't think I would want it any quicker, it's a handful as it is

I bought a Nitro Kyosho years ago under instruction that it would be easy to start, needless to say it was shoved in the garage after deciding it would make a better football than R/C car.

Years on and lots of practice has proved that these things will go, I have now bought A Yokomo GT4 for racing at a local track and the little beauty has a 1 HP engine, two speed gearbox and will do 60 MPH, Scary stuff.

If you need info or advice try looking at www.hpiracing.com then under the forum. There are lots of people in the same boat and only too willing to try and help, plus you can look at all the bodies that are available especially the scoobies. If you persevere then there is serious fun to be had with these things. Just make sure you get the correct one for what you intend to use it for!!

Subaru dealer in Herts sells the 1/10 scale tamiya replica (four wheel drive) build it yourself jobby for £160, I bought one... smashed it up (dam I thought buying a replica would not reflect on past performances at Brands !!)....fixed it.... Quenby Subaru in Herts is the dealer..

 

Halfords have 1/12th scale ready mades for about 90 quid.

 

I dont think anyone has mentioned Kyosho's Mini-Z Racers yet. They are brilliant fun and a good compromise between a toy and something more serious. They are 1/24 scale (a bit bigger than your mouse) and can run indoor on smooth surfaces. ~£120 but a mini marvel !
