i have a Tyvek from Halfords, but have stopped using it
it was leaving marks on my paintwork where it rubbed - should say i live in a "windy" area.. it also set off my clifford alarm !! also caused by wind
you can get better ones, but they cost £200 - £400

Checked there site and the price of the waterproof cover for an Impreza has gone up to £120. Worth checking what year that is and which spoiler it will fit over.

Hi,

I am contemplating getting an outdoor car cover not only to protect the car but to also make life harder for scum.

So, has anyone got one and do you think it's a good idea?
( I know it *might* make the scum more determined and it
will be a pain in the neck ).

I was looking for one but I thought that the scum might want to have a closer look.(bit like a xmas present)

 

Could be a good idea as most people use them on older cars to reduce rusting. I tend to think cars under covers are either wrecks or owned by grandads. You've got to be careful of scratching whilst pulling it on/off though. Also the wheels might be a bit of a giveaway that your scoob's hiding under there.

 

And the fact the cover would show the spoiler off! doh... hmm

 

Basicaly you would be giving the said 'scum' a nice warm tent to sit in while they work on disarming your immobiliser!

I use one to stop the birds that roost in the trees over my car from 'spoiling' my paintwork.

It is made from a breathable fabric called Tyvex and is silver with elasticated ends like a fitted sheet. It comes with 2 bungee cords that pass under the car from back bumper to under drivers door and front bumper to under passenger door to stop it blowing away in the wind. Bought from Halfords for £60 - Called Tyvek Top Cover. I have a MY00 with standard wing and the largest size fits fine. I have owned the cover for about 18 months and it is still okay. You can wash it in the machine as it gets a bit grubby over time. I use mine every night and it only takes a few minutes to fit and remove each day.

It seems like a good idea, and I've thought about it for my own car, but...

I can't help feeling that it is an open invitation to scum.

It sort of says "I've got something special under here."

It might attract the local yobs to have a closer look when otherwise they would have walked past.

i've got one from specialized car covers usually in Evo or Car etc

Only attention i've had from scum is when it hasn't been on and it's too tight for anyone to sit under. my biggest problem has been the bloody foxes chewing off the 4 tie straps that pass under the car. ithought it was scum as the cuts seemed so sharp until i caught the foxes red handed

 

Got mine from argos, pretty much the same as the 1 from halfords but its only £9.99, I only use it now & again cos im also worried about it leaving marks.

Mines just to stop the dust (SAD,EH) cos its garaged anyway.

Tailored to fit cover for P1 now fits my UK300 just!Specialised Car Covers use tough,almost padded,breathable cloth stuff.Avoid solid plasticy covers 'cos they make your car sweat.So long as a wet car is gritty clean a breathable cover is best.Same principle as Gore-Tex boots.Also 'cos its tailored,even down to little pockets for the mirrors,and has laggy bands front& rear & 4 fox flavoured straps it dont flap about against your gleaming paintwork.Unfold on.Fold up off.Sounds like Karate Kid.Oh,& £200ish but should outlast the oilfields.

Hi guys,

I bought a couple of covers around a year ago. They were manufactured in the states, but sold over here in the UK.

They sell them in different sizes, B,C,D, etc., depending on the type of car (and spoiler). I paid around £70 for size B (VW Golf) and £90 for size D (MY99 Impreza).

They are soft on the inside, so won't scratch the paint and are 100% waterproof. I use them if the car is parked up for a while and they've both look like new even after 18 months.

They are pretty large and cover the whole car, leaving only a 2-3" gap around the bottom of the car, so no worries about thieving gits spotting your nice alloys.

There's a strong plastic strap/buckle that loops around the underside of the car and the sides are all elasticated, so everythings held down well. I even had the cover survive a few storms.

I can't remember exactly where I bought them, but I'll have a rake around the Internet this afternoon or I'll post the exact details tonight when I get home.
