"I am told by the boys at scoobynet, (and alot off other subaru clubs) that if this ecu is fitted to a uk Subaru imprezza turbo, it will give you appx 260 bhp (a standard uk turbo is only 210 bhp) this is a massive increase in bhp / performance for not alot of money.

It is a very easy upgrade to do , you just simply unplug your old ecu and plug this one in its place"

Well, he didn't hear it from this ScoobyNetter!!

The Z4 is the Japanese saloon WRX ecu for model years 1995-1996.

This will plug in to a pre Sept 1996 UK turbo 2000 (saloon or wagon) and run the engine pretty much as if it were a Japanese spec WRX. It should give around 260PS (around 255bhp), but you need to keep to high quality fuels (V-Power or Tesco 99, for example).

The ECU will not fit Sept 96 onwards cars.

It may fit and its certainly good for 260PS on 97-98RON fuel; but whether it will run in anything other than limp Im less sure. A Z4 is better fitted to an A or B-Series JDM Saloon.

Early UK cars had a TD05; the issue comes from the speedo signal that the Z4 will be expecting (and wont get from a UK car). Without it the car will only run in limp, to prevent people from disconnecting the speedo to bypass the speed limiter...

The UK car does send the electrical speed signal to the ECU as per the Japanese model, so the car won't register a speedo fault, but that does raise an important point! If you fit a Z4 ecu to your UK car, you will inherit the 112 mph speed limiter.

Interesting point here... usually, on JDM imports, a gearbox can be used to convert the km/h speed into mph... this effectively raises the speed limiter from 186 km/h to 186 mph, which is a bit less of a limit This also conveniently makes the speedo read more usefully for UK roads. But that won't work on a UK car, well not without making the speedo useless anyway!

One alternative trick would be to get hold of one of the little boxes prodrive fit to the P1 to "trick" the JDM ecu into thinking they are not exceeding the speed limit... although that might cost more than the ECU itself!

I was running my MY96 UK turbo on a Z4 this weekend as an experiment with no issues, but then I wasn't trying to drive at more than 112mph

PS. There is another Z4 on ebay... currently a bit cheaper... reckon they'll both be near £80 by the time they sell though!

Z4 will work fine in a UK car but will log code 43 when you do an ECU diagnostics check due to the UK car not having the Throttle Position switch.

This is not a problem as you get the same fault in a UK car when you plug in the Prodrive chip that uses the Z4 map (with v.minor modifications).

You will however have the speed limiter set to 112mph, which the Prodrive chip modifies to 175mph IIRC.
