In just one week, we'll release to consumers the largest and most significant advance in gaming technology Microsoft has ever made: Windows Vista.
For the first time in Microsoft's history, we're releasing an operating system built from the ground up with gaming as a core scenario. With a worldwide presence of over 200 million gamers of all stripes, we're taking the world's most popular gaming platform and making it easier, safer, and more fun for everyone, while delivering new technologies that will deliver the most powerful, most immersive, most innovative gaming experiences to the Windows platform.
Unlike any OS before, we're driving Windows Vista as a true gaming platform, complete with a broad marketing campaign that introduces the Games for Windows brand, complemented by ground-breaking branded titles from Microsoft Game Studios as well as from many of the world's leading game developers. Not sure about ATI, but I know Nvidia haven't released a proper driver for it yet. It even states in the readme for the drivers that the driver is a beta release designed for just getting the OS running, (no performance features are enabled). They're expecting to have the final drivers ready by the consumer launch date. Until they do, any performance benchmarks are meaningless. I don't know why Toms hardware even bothered with that review. It's pointless.
In fact, if you look at the architecture, it is a huge step forward. The hardware manufacturers just need to get their fingers out and produce some decent drivers...

There are 32-bit and 64-bit versions 
It's got a completely different architecture. It's (in theory) much more secure. Each application runs in it's own space, so in theory if one crashes it shouldn't bring down anything else. The graphics core stuff (directx 10) is designed as a core part of the operating system instead of a bolt on (as it is in xp) which will allow much more advanced stuff in the future. Plus a load of other stuff...
And with the introduction of aero, sidebars, gadgets etc, it's prettier

Probably because they want as many old apps to work on it as possible. There are a great deal of software titles that simply won;t run on the 64bit OS.
whilst I have been running all the various versions of vista (beta) on my 64bit pc at home, i just cant see them gaining any new fans or users to this new os, as IMHO, it offers nothing new , in substantial terms. yes it looks better, yes it has beefed up the security etc etc etc, but i just have that feeling that they have brought nothing new or exceptional to the table.
and that is before apple release Leopard.
yeah sure MS command 96% of the OS market, it just pains me to see such a lucklustre and half finished job from MS, when they should have really taken this once in a 6 year timeline to produce something exceptional....
