Hmmm. My pc just turns itself off randomly
Any idea whats causing it-

It occurs when burning DVDs (using NeroVision)

and

When using XP fragmenter (I tried defrag to try to solve the problem!!)

?

My bits- all about 3yrs old

are
AMD64 3000+
ABIT KV8-MAX3
ASUS RADEON 9600XT

POST CODE after random shutdown is 9.9 (code= normal? i thought)

how much memory?

have you recently installed any new SW?

try a system restore to see if that helps

then get a memory checker proggy (free) and run some tests..

it could be the gfx card, if its having to run 3d stuff, mine would shut down turned out the card was US.. memory is the most likly though

It's got 1GB of 433 DRAM mem

Only nerovision installed lately

I dont run the gfx hard- dont play games

 

i have had a similar problem before random re boots thought it was the power pack but turned out to be the motherboard which was an abit one so got a asus motherboard and had no problems since it is worth checking memory first though

 

CPU overheating ?

we had this on a server, only shutdown when running a virus scan (CPU utilisation went up over 50% it was enough to do a thermal shutdown

Check your fans, also go into your BIOS and they usually have a page with RPM speeds of your fans, and also Motherboard and CPU temps

 

normally switching off is a power or heat issue

 

Yup, either gonna be a shut down safety on his MB or a fault with the power supply.

Dont think windows will be able to help you fix this one with error codes !

I'd open the case up let some cold air in and see if it help, put a big fan on it.. you know one of those household fans

 

yeh - get down to maplins - even a blue LED lit fan costs about only £7.

easy to fit

also when case is open - blow as much dust away as you can.

maybe get some thermal paste and recoat the cpu heatsink ?

 

before you do that remove as much as possible from the pc eg usb devices cards etc etc etc then give it a go

 

it tends to crash to the bluie screen with driver errors ?

 

Cleaned it up- although very dusty it's in a seethrough case so i dont let it get too bad!
I already had 4 fans but have added a further spare one

downloading some MB software to monitor this during some apps
