205 GTi 1.9 MI-16 engine but 1.6 gearbox.

Standard red coloured car, still had the 1.6 badges. Rocketed to 60 because the 1.6 had a closer ratio 'box but topped out at 110 for the same reason. Devil from the lights though.

Dad used to have a Ford P100 pick up with a very tuned Rover V8 that kicked out not far off 400bhp.
Apart from the rather fat rubber, it looked pretty stock.

He then went onto a BBR Mitsi Shogun (old shape) that was on about 280bhp - A fun machine but both were horribly unreliable.

There were rumours of a cossie powered robin reliant in warrington a few years ago. Was even said to have a small wheely bar on it. Don't know how true they where.

my dad use to have a Triumph Vitesse mark II

he bought it off a chap who was a rally driver hobbyist and wanted the car as his 'sleeper' it had the fettled 2.5 straight 6 out of the Triumph (can't remember model)

Webber carbs
lots of other bits I can't remember (I was only 10)

I used to remember it looked like an old bucket of crap but weighing about 800kg and pushing out about 170bhp it absolutely flew and made the so called hot hatches of the day look foolish.

OK, not a normal road car, but for me that was the ultimate sleeper or Q car as me and my Dad used to call it

Love the clio. Reminds me back in the day, my mate had a VX Nova SR, A-reg, the dull yellow with the brown tartan style trim. Looked totally standard on the outside, even original 3-spoke SR rims. One of the first with a VX 2.0 16v lump in. Not special nowadays, more of them about than a standard SR!!

There used to be an old Skoda (poss. Estelle) in Brum with a P911 engine in the back of it. That used to surprise a few boy-racers off the lights

Algik's?

Wouldn't have said it was particularly stealthy looking in present form though

My favourite was the standard looking Sierra Azura estate with a 400bhp engine it - apart from the 15" wheels it looked pretty stock ( it even had a normal exhaust sticking out ( for show only ) as the real system exit pipe was hidden ).
I can remember the look on one M3 owner's face when I had a passenger ride in it

Why would it top out at 110mph? Surely the 1.6 GTi doesn't so why should yours?

Mine runs an Mi16 box which is the same ration as a 1.6 I believe. It is livelier through the rev range and hits the limiter much quicker. It sure as hell doesn't hit the limiter at 110mph in top though.

Wasn't my car chaps! just know the owner couldn't get it to do too much over that, it was all off the line. Not exactly untouchable by today's standards but for a 1.6 motor 10 years ago it really flew. I ain't the expert!

A guy I know (Nick Butler) who looked after Dad's pick up did all sorts of sleepers.

Splitty VW camper with 911 Turbo engine (and totally modded chassis of course - Tyres were the only give away).
Morris Minor with nitrous'd V8.
Model T Ford - V8 and used as a pace car for F1(!)

And many others including evil yank-mobiles.

I had endless fun as a kid going there (Dad was good mates with the guy) and drooling over mad cars.

He even put a car into production - The Cirrus Gold.

Yes, don't get me wrong, I love the car too but I suspect people might guess it's not a standard one and is running over 4x the std power
