I know it is not a good trait,but it is UK drivers worst trait

I can't think of one anymore.Not one car on the road makes me think,wow,that person has done really well.I'm not talking silly supercar territory of £200k plus

Suppose it is the accessibility of all marques to all people that has totally devalued everything on the road.Range Rovers,Jaguars,Mercedes,BMW etc,does anyone really genuinely think these are prestige makes anymore or just another car?They don't do anything any better than other cars,so what is the point behind them now?

Been thinking hard and I still can't think of any car that says 'I have money'.Every RR sport I see I instantly (and probably wrongly) think remortgage job.Even Astons are pretty common.Maybe a DB5 would fit the bill though...old cars,not new ones

to a degree undestated cars like brand new Audi A8's.

May be there's a lot more people that are doing well and have more disposable income. I certainly think a lot of cars are financed by remortgages though.

My car was 36k when it was brand new but now worth around 8k. Theres no way i could have afforded it brand new.

Depreciation is a wonderful thing (unless of course you buy new!!!)

Bit of an odd one as your never know by just looking as it drives by etc if its paid for, on the credit card or leased - as have pointed out with the RR sport becoming popular.
Maybe its cars that show owner has some kind of taste / interest in cars ie something a little different ie the older Astons, AC's (non replicas) Catherham's etc.
Still think a lot of cars are sold for their perceived image ie BMW

I also think "Prestige marque" comes down to quality, rather than how expensive/flashy a car is.

We have a BMW, our first, which is now for sale. Trying to replace it with a 5 door family hatch, and nothing even comes close on interior quality, and thoughtful details.

New Focus, Golf, Leon, Astra etc all feel cheap and sparse inside in comparison.

Bristol says old money, lots of cars say money but not that many convey class and taste, depends whether you are bothered, most properly wealthy people avoid bling for the sake of it, they leave that to the rappers and football players. Those who have had money for a long time learn to not be showy, in fact they actively avoid it.

Cars like old landies, battered estate cars and older but immacualte Bentley's are old money, Conti GT is footballer territory.

BMW, Audi, Merc etc are more middle class motors (when new), for the more thrusting types, the rest have Saabs and Volvo's, anything aspirational goes more scuimmy the older it gets, I have an older Saab which doesnt really say much about me, wheras a BMW of the same age suggests I might be a bit flash, but on a budget !

if I saw someone driving a fairly new 911 I would say that they are doing alright

50k + is a lot to take out for a remortgage (depending on equity levels of course)

I'd say any new Ferrari driver is pretty rich, considering it probably won't be their only car. I've never seen a new'ish Ferrari parked out side a small house before.

I think the car that really say's wealth is still the Roller. Although they are getting popular with Gangster Rappers.

unless he is doing a PCP on a limited mileage of course, that would probably only run to about 600-700? per month

Was it 5th Gear that did a survey a few years ago about this. (it was not super cars though) and the Jag X-Type came out top.

A mate of mine works for Porsche and he says that about 90% of their sales are financed in some way but the majority are PCP'd.

Anything that doesn`t show that the owner is trying too hard.

That pretty much rules out all Ferrari`s, Lamborghini`s some Porsche`s and most expensive Merc`s.

The richest man I know (I don`t know him well, but I know he`s loaded, in fact he`s filthy rich) has a new shape E 320 CDI Estate and a battered old Range Rover. He`s not trying too hard because he doesn`t need to.

If I see a new Ferrari then the owner is probably doing OK. But there`s a massive difference between doing OK and being incredibly weathly.

Obviously, a Veyron shouts wealth, but shouts wealth a little too loudly in some circles.

My cousin runs a finance place, organising loans/remortgages etc, and hes done LOADS for guys who have pretty crappy incomes yet want to drive 911s/M3 convertibles etc.......they'll be screwing now that interest rates have risen!

So some have them on finance of up to £1k a month, some have remortgaged, who cares!

Does it make some of you feel better/more superoir knowing this?

I'd suggest for every "person" you know who has done this, there are 100 others who can afford it with no drama.

Thats almost certainly the case. When the debt/housing bubble bursts I think there'll be a lot of cheap X5's/Boxsters/Range Rovers floating about as people bought them when they 'felt' rich because their house was worth xxxk

I have never ever seen such a Chav rich car as the new Bentley. Every ned and his dog seems to have one !

Seamaster, Maserati's are very classy when in the right hands, there is a private plated 2 door around here that kind of ruins it, I think the Quattroporte is beyond that, it has what the Bristol has plus a little continental charm as well.

By the way, I claim to be nothing special or think I am nothing special, born in the back end of Manchester, so its all observations.
