I have had the same problem, 3 times now since I had the car.

Strange thing is, it always happened in the same place on the same road doing the same thing, i.e. accelarating hard in 2nd gear to overtake slow traffic.

I have cunningly fixed the problem by having a Scoobysport exhaust system fitted, it is on all the time now! Well till my O2 board thingummy is fitted in a few weeks.

Cheers

Simon

It's the third time now. The car has approx 6000 miles. It happened always in full throttle first gear acceleration and it last for some hours, then it disappears. After the second time I went to Subaru to have it fixed and also to put the PPP. The diagnosis found a fault in the crankshaft sensor. Then I upgraded to the PPP with the ECU reset hoping that this problem would disappear. But today, under the same circumstances (full throttle and first gear) the check engine light re-appeared.

Do you have any suggestion?

Thanks in advance

Caronte

You or the Subaru dealer need to access the OBD2 system and download the code. This will enable you to id the fault.

take it back to the dealer obviously there is a fault but also you get a new ecu with the ppp so an ecu reset wouldn't have done any thing. make sure they put the restricter in the pipe and connected the rear o2 sensor back up after the exhaust change.

The crank position sensor problem is affecting quite a few cars.

It always happens in the same way... comes on at high revs and then goes out again. The US cars have also suffered from this.

Fitting a PPP would not affect it.

It seems the sensitivity of the crank sensor isn't very good and it can lose the position trigger at high revs. I suspect that a better sensor will be fitted under warranty.

Thanks Pete,
so the problem is the sensor itself, ok

What restrictor is this? When I had my PPP done there was a small brass plug in a bag with the returned standard bits. I wondered what this was, where does it go? In a dump valve or wastegate actuating pipe presumably. Is the PPP restrictor bigger or smaller? Why? Anyone know?

that was your old restricter and the new one should be slightly smaller

I am based in Johannesburg South Africa and drive a WRX MY01 with PPP (ECU, exhaust midsection and back box) and have had the same issue with the "check engine light" coming on after hard acceleration and usually in first gear (at 6000 rpm). I have also suspected the crank sensor. this forum confirms that.

I got the check engine light on my PPP'd MY01 after a hard thrash. My dealers said it was a faulty ECU and replaced it under warrenty... i got the first PPP from the dealer in question...

Hope there isnt a dodgy batch going around!!!

No problems at all since it was replaced!!!

I'd sort of gathered that a small brass plug with a hole thro it was a restrictor....

SO nobody knows where it goes and what it restricts then?
