Default Help,over-reving

My 95 impreza has decided it wants to rev at around 2krpm now and again, when im not touching the accelerator! it does it when im in gear as well as in neutral, and when braking in gear it still makes it want to go forward, not good! I know very little mechanically to be totally honest, but my initial thoughts were the clutch. The biting point is quite far out, and the pedal is soft still so i really dont know. Then on my last journey it didnt do it once. anyone have any suggestions what it sounds like it may be?

Aus - 05 onwards are DBW on the WRX. STIs are earlier. I expect similar in UK

Check the throttle cable rocker (dont know the correct wording) and make sure the cable is able to return to idle position without hindrance.

Cant imagine it has anything to do with the clutch ... as already mentioned I'd check for free running of the cable and that it is allowed to come to rest both under the bonnet area and in the footwell (ie carpet mats not getting in the way) before moving onto the electronics.

averyp2 - if it is doing it suddenly, as in not after you've revved it, that is say you are idling then it suddenly revs to 2000, then it wont be the throttle cable. It'd be something else altogether....
