Or is it something I am perfectly in my rights to keep quiet about when the day comes (it would be warmed up - so no sound)? After all, I'd find it hard to have a guilty conscience where most car dealers are concerned. They'd probably try to rip me off one way or another... Apologies if you are a car deler who never rips people off.

 

I think Pete Croney said it would cost about 600 quid to have the piston slap fixed. Of course it would probably cost a dealer a lot less.

 

Why not contact IM and try and have it fixed under warranry. It's a know problem and they may accept a goodwill claim.

Also as an honest car dealer we insist on all >98MY tarde ins to be left overnight so we can check

The principle of caveat emptor would apply here ie the buyer should beware.

However in the p/ex form the dealer will at the very least ask you to warrant that there are no mechanical defects with the vehicle that you are aware of. Therefore if you were not aware of the problem you would be better off.

 

Why not take your car for trade-in, and if they complain about piston slap say "They all do that, sir"

Unfortunately they would laugh in my face as it's an evil MY98 WRX (Jap import)...
So how much would your dealer knock of my part ex then?

Depending on the deal, between £750 to £1000.

Any dealer should take imports in part ex. All we do is trade them out, so you may not get the best price.

I part-exed my car on Saturday. It didn't have piston slap or any other problems but I did read the form they gave me to sign. It asked:

1.. Do I have any finance outstanding on the car?
2.. Is the service history and mileage accurate to my knowlege?
3.. Does it have a current MOT certificate?

That was it. They didn't even drive it but offered me £500 over the A1 condition price in Parkers guide. And FYI this was from a main Honda dealer.
