Question

Hi,

Following my latest thread, concerning a major engine rebuild that may enable my my99 impreza to achieve 400ps,

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=53834

I have recently discovered a 22b engine for sale.

Questions:
a) is it a straight swap? (my99 for 22b engine)
b) can this engine be tuned further, or is it already streched to the limit?
c) any problems with 22b engines that I should be aware of?

Help is very much appreciated!!!

Thanks,

António Correia Jr.

As long as I can recall the 22B engine is based on the Sti IV engine (MY98) and not the V version.
I guess you should expect at least some problem with the electric wiring, don't know about other stuff like gear, clutch etc.

Yes it is V4 '98 based. Wiring will be a problem, in particular, the AIC.

As for the engine, it should simply be seen as a 2.2lt version of a standard STi engine. It's internals are no stronger.

It would be easier to get 400bhp from a 2.2lt, but you'd still need to uprate the internals, and this would make it a very expensive route.

Mark.

Thanks Dukas

I've read some articles on the web about this engine... some state that it delivers power like no other Impreza engine.

Since this engine is already a tuned version of the Sti IV, I gather that it should be left as it is.

I wonder how it compares to a P1 or a Sti VI with a stroker kit and forged pistons...

Any 22b owners around?

Thanks Mark

I think you've just answered my previous question... I should be better off buying an Sti engine and improving it (cosworth pistons, stronger and lightened components, stroker kit).

Using a 2.2lt closed deck block, would be a great starting point, but buying a 22b engine, just for the block !!!!!!!!!

I believe the EJ22T block is still available new, if you look around.

Thanks yet again

I've seen in another thread something about the EJ22T... I'll look into it.

I just want to do it the right way (if there is such a way to obtain 400ps!).

Cheers,
