Power without noise - is PPP the best?
Hi guys
I've got the green light from the two most important entities (wife and insurer) to go for more power. Car is a standard MY00 Wagon.
Budget would stretch to PPP, but I'd like opinions on the best route for the money. I know PPP keeps the warranty, but is that it's only advantage?
Anyway, my requirements are:
* Don't want it too loud or deep - it's a Wagon too. Full SS sounds way too loud for me and would not be appreciated by other half and sprog (understatement).
* Not interested in winning Dyno day awards, but want great driveability.
* I'm not particularly mechanically minded, so low maintenance, ease of use and reliability are absolutely critical.
If you were in my situation and had the same requirements what would you buy, and who from? Brakes and wheels are sorted, so don't need those.
Thanks

I wanted the same and went for PPP. Then I added a decat DP and it was still quite quiet. Most noise has come from an induction kit.
PPP with a DP is quieter than just a SS backbox I reckon. But it does pick up when you gun it.
PPP has a delicious spread of torque, but I am sure you could achieve the same with a Link or Unichip, but watch what centre and BB you put on. Could try a Remus BB as they are supposed to be quiet.
Could also consider a boost controller - e.g manual or HKS EVC IV.
For under a grand you could have boost controller and downpipe and leave your other exhaust bits on. This should give you 250-260 bhp? You would benefit from a boost gauge and maybe a Knocklink with this setup.

I pretty much agree with you John.
I was a bit paranoid about noise when my BPM DP and ScoobySport straight through centre was fitted .... needn't havce worried though, it's quieter than my previous MY94 with a ScoobySport BB alone !!
Cheers

Ive a MY00 turbo 4 door with PPP, having just had her rolling roaded (and a noticable difference when fitted
) i can tell you its a worth while investment
It adds value to your car to start with
and ill describe how the torque looks
(my car incidentally pushes 249bhp and 238lbs of torque)
at 1500 rpm she spikes pushing 140lbs of torque, that drops at 1750 to 120lbs, from 2000 to 3750 she just climbs up to 230lbs of torque where she stays fairly flat (slight increase up to 238lbs@4500 to 5000rpm) then there is a gentle decrease in torque to 200lbs@6500 and petering off at 160lbs@7000rpm.
It sounds a little technical but she just pulls to the red line in any gear now
its much better and there is a more throaty noise from the exhaust, not too intrusive but good over 4k

Go 'link' and DP for the same money. It won't make any noticeably more noise (apart from a small amount of turbo whistle-with the radio on you won't hear it at all) but it'll give you more than PPP and you can tune it much further later on IMHO.

PS Tony '238 lbs' pah! mine put out 232lbs without PPP (yes it's a MY00 as well).

Surely for the cash boost controller and downpipe would be best gains and least noise?
But PPP has superb low down torque - dareisay as good as it gets? Supposed to be 258lbft on MY00 with original DP still on and just a centre and rear change and it comes in real low.

Ok, I have to say that from the answers so far, PPP looks like the best fit for me as I'm scared of the idea of having something that could go wrong if I fiddle with it.
John, who fitted your PPP? I've searched through the posts and it looks like it was a dealer fit. You can answer off-bbs if you want. I've got a euro-import MY00 so I'm not sure how keen prodrive will be to fit the PPP, or am I worrying about nothing?
A goup buy would also be handy for me :-)

Ever wondered what a Harrier might sound like at take off.....fit the PPP conversion with exhaust system. All whoosh's and hiss, and lots of pops and bangs. Other systems seem to sound too, dare I say it, boy racer and over the top. All in all a perfect compromise.
