Right Im looking at getting a impreza for track days
All I need to know is what are the main problems with the very old shape impreza.
I dont know what type Im going for but itll be a cheap one as Im on a budget.
So what parts break first?

Also I/we want around 300bhp whats the easy'st way to get this?
intake
full exhaust
intercooler upgrade
Boost upgrade
walbro??????

Also will the standard ecu be able to cope with these upgrades or will a aftermarket ecu be needed?

what boost is the standard turbo able to take also what turbo is the standard turbo?

Im sorry Im a complete noob but we got to start somewhere so .....be gentle

Your best best for track is a type RA. Try to find one that's already been modified as it will ultimately work out a lot cheaper. There are quite a few round at sensible money- there was an early type RA on here a week or so ago for circa £3500. The early RA has very short gearing, so 240bhp from an early RA feels like 280ish from a UK car / import WRX.

One word of warning though- they are not cheap to run on track, in terms of brakes, fuel and tyres. Similar (if not more) fun can be had for less money.

Although they do grip pretty well, they don't 'handle' straight out of the box and need significant experience and tweaking to get them 'right' and to your taste. This is not necessarily expensive though- you just need someone who knows what they are doing to get the suspension geometry right.

 

jlewis - note on Scoobynet the "very old shape impreza" is called a "classic".

People with the old model get most upset if you don't use that term !!

RRh we intend to do extensive geometry set ups so out of box handling is fine.

Really depends on what model you are looking at.....
Standard turbo is a TD05-16g for most early imports, thay can handle around 1.5bar reliably (IIRC), but you'll need to remap the ECU to make sure that fueling is taken care of....
You will get alot of varying answers on what the standard internals are capable of. Personally, as a layman, I reckon you'd be talking around 320-350bhp for an early STi (a bit less for a WRX). You'll probably need an uprated clutch at this point, and you'll be popping gearboxes if you do any action at the strip.
Hopefully this'll start the ball rolling.....

the car will be used for racing not dragging
so gearbox's are a weak link?
