Default crunching

hello i hav a bugeye wagon wrx its got 48k and is on a Y reg. the problem im having is if im driving hard , when im going up or down through the box it will grind 90% of the time going into 4th. it doesnt rufuse to go in or jump out and its not even difficult to get into 4th its just that it grinds and its worrying me quite a bit now. its been happening from what ive noticed for just on a week , there is no grinding when im driving normally just when im pushing it. has anyone any ideas on what it could be ? im dreading it being a new box.
thanks in advance ste

Try redline HEAVY shockproof gear oil first, if that doesnt help then see API!

I might be in the same boat mate.

I'm sure 911 works for API.

Ok how much for a rebuild - lets get some prices

I have the same thing in when going into 5th on my bugeye, I just tend not to rush the last gear change when I push hard out of roundabouts, etc.

I had the exact same thing wrong with my MY99 uk turbo, crunching when going from 3rd to 4 th when pushing it and after a service and new gear box oil (good exspensive stuff) it was fixed so i would suggest a good oil change should see it alright. !!

well its booked into prosport a week on sat for a new down pipe so ill ask them to have a look at it. the oil seems clean but i think a gearbox oilchange wouldnt go amiss and if that sorts it its a hell of a lot cheaper than a rebuild. thanks for all the help and advice lads

You could try some Millers CRX 80W140 from Zen Performance. Helped a little on mine. Quite thick stuff though but okay once warm.

I forgot to put on, it seems to do it most when I do block changes. Say from 3rd straight to 5th, Like when you accelerate rapidly out of a junction etc. and then when you get up to speed put it in top for nice easy cruise.

If you come off a roundabout on a duel carraigeway in second, put your foot down, change up to third which takes you up to the legal limit 70, what is the point in going to fourth just to change straight to 5th half the time putting in fourth and not even bringing the clutch up before changing to 5th.

Something I was taught when learning to drive lorries, If you dont need to go into a gear, don`t, use block changing. In an empty lorry we`d start in 3rd and then go straight to 5th as changing to fourth didn`t give you anything apart from another gearchange as they were so close at that point.
