Ok here's the deal, im 22, 4 years NCB, insurance doesn’t worry me. Just the maintenance, and running costs of owning a Subaru...

I currently have a Golf GTi, 2.0 8v, just for now until my next car. Its pretty **** on petrol and it depresses me! Im wondering if I upgrade to a scoob, will it be even worse? Also services, hidden owner history of the cars scares me! So many have been ragged around, but I know there are some decent ones.

So basically, running costs, maintenance (services, parts etc) and history of the vehicles is the most im worried about.

IN REALITY, is it worth me getting one if im worried about the above?

If you get the latest UK unmodded classic Impreza with FSH you can afford and find a good non-Subaru garage to service it, it shouldn't cost you too much. I get about 22mpg, it's very reliable, so it's pretty much just servicing. I just had a major service from Special Scoobys in Colchester for £180.

If you buy an older imported classic, I think it could be a bit of a money pit.

 

If you are using more or less your whole budget you could be asking for trouble on a 11 year old performance car.

You need to be able to cope financially with the worst case scenario (£2k min). Servicing is cheap if you can do it yourself.

In short NO

It wont be worth the hassel as they're not that economical and as soon as you get to grips with it mods will become a frequent fixture in the diary and with them the MPG only falls . You'll get through a front set of tyres soon enough and the worst case scenario clause will always be ringing in the back of your head

 

Before my Scoob i had an Audi A6 2.8 Quattro - i moaned like f*** about how thirsty it was all the time. moan, moan feckin' moan.

Then i bought a Scoob then i realised what thirsty was - especially when you have a heavy right foot

 

Agree with the above, if you don't have a rainy day fund you can find yourself right in the **** if the car suffers a major failure, not that I would know all about this from personal experience of course you understand

 

these kinds of things are exactly why i did not buy an impreza yet.
i was also 22 wheni considered buying now 23 and in the end i bought a VR6 as it is pretty bomb proof although MPG are pretty similar

although in the next few months wheni get a pay rise il be getting a scooby!!

as people said to me when i said the same as u on here if u have to think about the cost u can't afford it!!

 

i'd say buy a prelude 2.2 vtec for a couple of years then get an Impreza

 

I thinkk your on the wrong site asking if you should get a scooby or not....

Budget 2k for rebuild

 

As above, if you really want the one, set aside some money for when/if you need it, especially if you opt for the older cars with more dubious history.

Chances are you'll be fine. But having the rainy day fund will keep you clear.

Obviously make sure you have additional cash as well as teh above to cope with sub 20mpg consumption (or 25-27mpg if you drive like an old fart) of Super unleaded (if the particular car you buy needs 98+ron) And also be aware that the 3year and cambelt service cost will make you spit feathers (especially if you frequent a dealer).

 

dont bother they are way too costly you cant get close to compare it to ya golf!! 2 differant cars all together anything to do withe name subaru means money!! i use mine as a weekend toy and a cheap runaround during the week i worked out that iwas spending £45 quid a week for 150 miles ish?? on fuel to then get my ax diesel andwhich costs a about £10 to do similair miles!! car has already paid for it self now my scoob only does about 50 miles in a month if its lucky!!!

 

I didnt when i bought my first scoob...on my 3rd one now...


my advise budget £2k for mods.. and maybe £2k for an engine rebuild if you end up buying a bad example...

 

i have spent 3k in 4 months on mine!!!

daft thing is everything i have replaced didnt even need replaceing!!!

 

If Golf petrol consumption depresses you dont even think about Subaru.
Petrol consumption shouldn't enter your head if your thinking of an Impreza.
Go for a golf diesel. Plenty of poke and economical.

As a daily commuter, I get 33mpg from my WRX. I do use the power, but only at the weekends, but have never realised less than 26mpg.

Alot of people here seem to like to boast about how little mpg they can get, I think it's like young men from the chav army who like boasting about how much beer they can drink.

Unless you drive round in 2nd gear you should get 27-30mpg from a newage Scooby.

your talking ****e mate i used to take mine easy all week and got 150mile ish off a full tank £45 i aint no chav and i was driving for economy, thats why i bought a 2nd car as it was costing to much for a daily runner. by the way its my99 classic turbo.

 

My STI 03 is averaging near 60miles around town to £20 of fuel...maybe because of the petrol prices....or the excitment of owing a new STI...

 

your getting less than me!!! although my figure of 150 miles off £45 quid is combined!!!

 

I am yet to fill up and see just how bad it is..

its bad!!!!!!!!! i was filling up every week for around 150 miles!!! the very most i have seen is 210 which was all motorway on a full tank!!!

 

I take my hat off to you. I am on my second newage and i have never got anywhere near 33 to the gallon. My wrx was more like 23 and my sti....well lets say green peace wont thank me for it.
I dont think its boasting, its stating a fact.
If anybody asks if Imprezas are economical i will advise based on my own experiance.
When i bought my last car another customer was in the show room and was flicking through the brochures when he asked the salesman if the consumption figures where accurate (Wrx figures quoted a combined 30 something to the gallon), his reply was a resounding no, not a chance in the real world.
For the record, i dont drive round in 2nd...

 

Even the good ones go bang if you drive them hard enough.

 

As long as you do your homework, I think you can pick up a good example that will be pretty reliable. As a mechanical thing, yes Scoobs can go bang... just as any other car can if you abuse it! As to fuel, any 300bhp 4x4 performance vehicle is going to drain your wallet... it does exactly what it says on the tin!

 

If you're worried about fuel consumption, then a Scooby is not for you.

im in same boat........so im just looking at uk turbos now.

if your worried about petrol theres no point buying one.........i had 1 16v cupra and was quite happy with the mpg i got (250 miles to a tank )

you buy a performance car and imo you gotta expect some big bills to repair things! thats why im staying away form jap imports - im just not comfortable with them and the standard uk turbo is more than powerful enough for me @ 22!

take your time and buy one thats been looked after. i think the most important thing about buying an impreza is how the previous owner looked after it. if they tell you every little thing about it and how long theyve owned it - great. if they just want rid and "och tyres need replacing on all cars....the engines only a wee bit noisy cos its cold - they all do it" "thats not smokey its just mist" id stay well clear.

the markets full of imprezas. get the right one and youll enjoy it. compare it to any other car for the same money with power/performance/service costs i dont think anything can touch it.

 

I have a uk MY99 turbo.

Costs about £45 to fill her up and lasts me 230 miles normal driving with a blat every now and then

It improved when i got my Hayward and Scott exhaust.

hmmm, to be comfortable, how much money would you need spare to run a classic sti, maybe about 100-150 miles a week
already figured out it'll be cheaper to have a 2nd car for going to work as I do 250 miles a week just travelling to and from work!
