any help appreciated.

I had a mate who knows quite a bit check it out today and it could be the universal joints in the propshaft that are shot.
He lay across the back seats, poking his head out the car to look under as I drove in a slow circle backwards & forwards and he says that each "clunk" coincided with the propshaft shifting sideways a bit!
So it's off to my mechie in the middle of the week to try a spare propshaft to see if that is the problem. If the clunking goes away then we know what the problem is! Fingers crossed...
I'll post the results soon.

i got a judder when turning left only, turned out to be inner driveshafts, so replacing my sti7 driveshafts for 4k sti8 ones and will be fitted tomorrow and will let you know how i get on
Sorry for not replying sooner.
Had the propshaft swapped out, problem persisted. Had the sideshafts removed & sent away & apparently they were about 50-60% worn, so replaced entire sideshaft on both sides, including inner- & outer-CV joints which wasn't cheap...
And... the clunk-clunk-clunk is still there!!!
So for now I reckon I'm going to just drive it as-is until something breaks or falls out of the car
