You have chosen a good place to start. The fuel filter is probably the easiest service item to change.

Its that round silver (its silver on mine) cylinder (about the size of an orange) that sits at the top right in the engine bay. It has 2 curved metal pipes in the top joined to rubber hoses. All you have to do is undo the bracket holding it (just a lever no screws etc) then undo the clips on the hoses, twist the rubber bit and pull it off. Then refit to the new filter making sure the hoses go back on the same pipes (there should be an arrow on the filter to show fuel flow direction).

The engine may start and then stall the first time. Just restart again and it should run perfectly.

I think all the Impreza fuel filters are the same so Halfrauds or any motor parts place should be able to sell you one.

Careful when taking the pipes off. The system's pressurised, so leave it overnight and get a few rags ready to catch the fuel that will probably spurt out a little when you take the pipes off. Soon as you have the filter off, don't tip it over or you'll get petrol everywhere. Just stick it on the floor out of the way.
