The turbo heat shield is missing

 

intresting, my99 STI doesnt have one either!

 

just looking for advice on the engine, anything look really wrong, the rad is fooked, intercooler fins damaged,but on 120k car, all normal stuff ???

 

No turbo heat shield, rad looks like it's had a leak, aftermarket silicone hose on the intercooler. Rest looks normal.

 

Is it not missing a rad fan? I have two on mine (MY95 import)

The damage on the rad looks like where the other fan would be.

 

Ah, i think imports have A/C dont they, 2nd fan is for air con

 

does it matter the heat shield is off ? what does it look like ? is it to just stop heat like the manifold one going into engine ?

 

The heat shield is a funny looking thing covers the turbo then comes upto just under bonnet scoop with out this the intercooler will suffer heat soak even worse as the heat the turbo genarates will just go onto the intercooler

 

anyone have a pic with one so i can see wot it should look like ?

Looks like its got P1 seats

Turbo heat shield off probably means its got (or had ) a decat downpipe on and the previous owner / garage didn't bother modifying the shield so left it off.

Rad looks like its had a leak

 

yeah,it does have a decat.
why would a decat mean the shield wont fit ?
i thought a decat was for the 2nd cat only, does a decat mean both cats off or is it optional ?

A uk classic turbo has 2 cats, 1 in the downpipe and one in the centre section. The downpipe is the one that mates to the turbo. The heatshield has a slot in thats approx 3" - 4" wide so that it passes over the std downpipe. decat downpipes are generally wider than std and usually are at least 5" approx wide as it joins the tubo, be it twin dump or open neck. So you have to trim the heatshield so that the slot is wider than this.

 

cheers for that, on my old sport, we only replaced the 2nd cat, i.e left the bigger one on the downpipe.
