hi, when taking propshaft from box is it ok to remove the gearbox support to get to the bolts?

 

What bolts?
The prop only has 4 bolts to the rear diff and 2 in the centre support

 

I was gonna say that Iain... but i thought it was too obvious..... maybe someone who doesn't know such simple things shouldn't be aiming to change their own gearbox...??

 

ok i have changed 2 wheel drive ones before first time i have worked on 4 wheel drive where do i need to take it away from box?

 

depending on what year car it is, on early ones (which is what i think you have) you can unbolt the prop halfway down where the centre support for it is.... later cars you have to unbolt it at the diff, and then also remove the centre support.....then the shaft will slide out of the box, dripping oil out if you've forgotten the drain the box..

 

hi yeah it the earlier one 95, cheers for that have not got the problem of draning the oil though it's allready leaked out onto the drive.

 

just one more thing will i need to put a trolly jack on front of engine before i remove the box.

 

probab;y not for taking the box out... but it's not a bad idea to do something to hold the front of the engine 'up' when replacing the box...... it helps the angle of attack so to speak!

 

The engine will need to be propped up or it'll sag forwards and make taking the box off awkward, not to mention getting it back on.!
If you have not got a spare jack then jam a suitable size wedge of wood behind the sump so that it bites against the subframe.
