please help, me impreza my97 has developed a fuel smell, now it only happenes on start up after the car has sat still for more than 5 hours.
it's worse first thing in the morning but only lasts for 5 mins max......! it then goes. i have checked the all fuel lines, rubber and metal. around the tank and under the bonnet.
it smells worse inside the car, but even when the smell is strong inside the car i can not pin point were the smell comes from outside.
as a last resort i pulled the carpet up on the n/s as the fuel pipe run through but could see no stains or signs of a leak. and with the carpet up it didn't make the smell worse.

if any body has had this fault please help. it's getting to the point were the wife and kids dn't want to ride i the car just in case it goes up in flames.............! bit over the top.

have you tried getting out of the car and smelling the exhaust the fumes sometimes come through the boot my m8ts does the same and its always worst on first start up from cold
