my mate had this on his classic, and I know of it happening on a bug-eye.

in both cases the fix was the same.

you'll think I'm mad...but...in both cases it was resolved by four new tyres!

I have a '95 wrx import... also did the clonk thing... had it checked for steering/suspension/other? wear... 2 new Toyo proxes later, and I only get an occassional sound now... whereas before it was very apparent. Why it works, no idea!

Will have to replace them soon and see if that sorts the problem.

I get it as the LSD's cause crabbing of the fronts as I reverse, only noticeable on full lock.

Posted exactly the same thing on ImprezaSport.net a short while ago. It seems to be quite a common problem.

My tyres are reaching the end of their life, but since the problem only happens when it's cold, I'll not know if new tyres will fix things (it's warm enough now that it doesn't do it anymore)

Had this problem last year on my Classic. It appears that the diffs are meshing into reverse after driving forwards. Subaru changed the diff oils under warranty and all was fine.

I have MY05 STI and get it most days when reversing off my drive on full lock. Glad to know I'm not the only oiione, not so worried now. My tyres are being changed on Saturday as they are sh&gged too. Bit of a common theme here.

I experience this clunking but only after heavy driving.
It happens as stated above when reversing on full lock. Actually it has started doing it going forward on full lock also now.

It has been happening for years now and has gradually got worse. I have been told by four different Subaru garages that it is the anti roll bar links and that it's nothing to worry about. I have changed these links and it made no difference.

I have four brand new T1Rs on.

I am sure it is just something worn as it only happens when the I come back from a long journey and not when the car is cold.

Yep, I get this too, first thing in the morning when reversing off driveway on full lock.

Sometimes just the 1 'clonk', but sometimes twice...
