Default Strange whistling noise when driving? Any ideas??

Hi

I've got a MY00 classic, standard engine\turbo with a re-circ dump valve.

The other night i was driving and noticed a strange constant whistling noise when doing 40mph+. Can only hear it with the drivers window open so i think its something outside and on that side of the car??

Anyone have any ideas on this?

It does it around 40mph no matter what gear i'm in and whether i am coasting along or driving normally.

If i put my foot down it seems to go but cant be sure as the wind noise\turbos\engine makes its presence felt!!! If i slow below 40 it disappears.

Hope its nothing bad.. (turbo leaking air?)

Any ideas?

Could be an air leake as turbo is coming into boost hence around 40mph
check the intake hose as these can warp under the turbos heat did so on my97 replaced with samco not cheap but worth it tricky to work on also as runs under inlet and tight fit with power steering pump

Wing mirror or wiper blade. To find out which one wrap one at a time in a few layers of clingfilm... What you do after you've found out which one.. I have no idea!!

If it is fitted with an Autobahn FMIC check all the welds for pin holes. Can be quite interesting.

Perfect solution, drive with the window up, and live by....If i can't hear it, it's not happening!

Thumbs up

I too have a MY00 classic that does exactly the same!

The whistling started about 2 weeks after I bought it, I presumed it was leaking air from the turbo. I found 2 pipes that were coming loose, tightened them all down and no difference!!

It never occured to me it could be a wing-mirror or wiperblade!!

does it sound like blowing over the top of a bottle if so it could be the windscreen top rubber lifting
has it had a new windscreen recently ?

no its more like a high pitched wind noise... dont think the cars had a new screen, i've had it just over a month and theres nothing in the history... and the sound is very much 'outside' the car..

I too have an MY00 and mine does this. It's just wind noise passing through the tiny gap on the drivers side mirror.
