Default Quick advise on turbos please

Iv got a my93 WRX saloon with a td04 turbo fitted. What im wanting to know is what would be a good turbo to upgrade to. I know about the td05 but they seem a little hard to come by and expensive. What do people think of the IHI vf range?? Iv seen a vf 23 and a vf 35 forsale are they any good?? or is the td05 the only way to go.

Any other options would be great.

Your saloon should have a TD05 fitted, only the wagons came with a TD04, have another look otherwise something is seriously up!!

It has a td04 fitted I have double checked. Was told that the early wrxs did come with a td04??? Maybe the prev owner blew it and took the cheap option??? Any ideas on a decent upgrade?? Have a full 3inc decat and a k&n airbox filter.

Depends on your "targets" mate but a hybrid TD04 may be a decent transmission friendly upgrade, fairly cheap as well at around £400 on exchange from Andy F....

Think if you have supporting mods you will hit 300 with the TD04H and there will me minimal lag....

I just replaced my TD04 (MY98 WRX wagon) with a VF35. I did the same kind of mulling over things as you, and came to the conclusion that even though I'd like an Andy F hybrid (AFP04H), once you put the VAT on, it's nearer £500 plus you've handed in your existing turbo for exchange.

Instead I bought a VF35 out of a low mileage 2003 STi for just over £200, it drops straight in and will make a reliable 1.1-1.3 bar all day long. It spools up a little higher in the revs than the TD04 but once it gets started the VF35 hits full boost much quicker. My target is 300bhp, same as you. Double bonus is that I then stuck my totally knackered TD04 on ebay and clawed back another £40 to offset the purchase of my VF35...

The TD05s I saw were all either straight out of a scrapyard with no proper description and mainly had the 90 degree inlet which wasn't suitable for me, although with your early model it will probably suit. Whatever you go for, you'll need a remap before you can use full boost.
