Default Sorry, but I just have to share this with you

Yesterday, some of you may know from previous posts that I had my MY96 Turbo 2000 into the Subaru main dealers for its first service under my ownership. After driving there and thinking about the new MY06 and whether or not I could be cheeky enough to ask for a quick spin in it, I decided that you don't get anything in life unless you asked for it so...off we went in a brand new MY06....

What can I say?????
Its absolutely brilliant, its totally different from a classic in so many ways, everything is light compared to the classic. Gearbox is very positive with litte room for any error. The turbo seems to kick in around 2000 revs which is great for everyday driving because I find in the classic you don't get to use the turbo at all unless you are committed to some hard driving.

You don't tend to get the thump of the turbo anymore, which is a bit disappointing but its just swift from the word go, non of this waiting that many scoobs have.

The best bit is the torque, this I believe is better because of the extra half litre displacement but, my god, when I say it pulls in any gear in any rev range, believe me it does. Cruising at aroun 40 in fourth, slight blip of throttle and were off!

Its so usuable, thats what I love about it, its swift all the time, with the classic again I find you are aways waiting for an opportunity to let lose because your a bit scared that if you open up in this traffic, you may end up in the back of someone.

I was doubting scoobies after owning on, thinking maybe I should go for an EVO because of the extra power, or maybe even a skyline. However, now after test driving the 2.5l WRX I feel that maybe its not as quick as the latest FQ or skyline, but its more usuable as an everyday performance car.

Pros.

Hardly any lag
Torque
Easy to drive
Quick from the word go
Rev counter in the middle (gets a bit of getting used to)

Cons.

Can't hear the engine burble
Makes my classic feel like a shed
No turbo thump

Is that just a WRX, maybe you should ask for a go in an STI next time

Not sure what that has to do with this thread but never mind.

A couple of points:

-Decat/hi flow exhaust system (esp the down pipe) would make a big difference to the way your scooby delievered its power. It makes the car pull harder lower down. If you were to then have it remapped too................

-WRXs and even the classics had their burble subdued by very restrictive exhausts, particularly the backboxes from the outset. That's why aftermaket options are so popular. The new one suffers more cause of extra refinement from inside the cabin. Get a decent backbox on there and

The kick from the turbo is but a mapping session away. It seems that the old school turbo wait for it.....whoaaaaaaaaaaaa isn't in vogue. Ok, so it may not be the most sophisticated means of power delivery, but it's great fun, it's a shame to see it being replaced by the more linear power delivery in so many turbo cars.

Yep, have a friend with a 1.8T GTi.

It's not fit to wear the badge IMHO!

Boring, souless car that seems to have no appetite nor ability to go quickly.

Great quality interior though.

And the main reason there's no burble is the equal length maniold. I must admit, I am really liking the 06 models.

MY06 does have equal length headers or so the salesman told me, and he seemed to know his stuff. I've just traded my RB5 for a new wagon and I have to say I agree with erverything in the opening post. The car is a lot smoother but feels just as quick , maybe I'm getting old but I just don't need the noise anyomore.

don't get me wrong my Wagon will get PPP as soon as it can but the new car feels very good standard.

162 it's on there I think

honestly go drive the new car and tell me it's not better. My RB felt like an old bucket when I got back in after a 20min test drive in the 06

I nearly sold my RB a month back but couldn't bring myself to do it, the replacement was going to be a TVR tuscan s.

the only other impreza I'd even consider is a 22b

In a similar vein, I dropped my WRX off to get a few bits checked and adjusted before its test on Monday. I got a 1.4 Astra in exchange and its like driving a big wet sponge with wheels. No power, no handling, no anything really... felt like a pensioner driving it as I couldn't get the useless piece of **** over 50mph! Not that I'd want to travel at such terrifying speeds in such a deathtrap...

Default evo vs classic

Hi
I drive a 99MY RB5 and work for a mitsi dealer and get to drive evos regularly including the fq 400. A friend of mine has an 03 MY sti and swore it was better than the evo and I wasnt convinced (till I bought the RB5). The evo has obvious power advantages but is a lot less planted and very twitchy at higher speeds. Id go for for my scooby any day!!!
