When I had my old Ford explorer converted the garage was in the middle of converting an early WRX wagon .The guy told me that it's the same as any other conversion . The gas tank took up most of the boot though but the owner used it to commute by all accounts so wasn't bothered !

If you're worried about gas milage buy something remotely economical in the first place.
Something not permenant 4x4 to start with.

LPG isn't all that good IMHO. My old man was running a Ford Explorer (for site work) which he had converted.
Performance was down, but it was forever in the garage with little things going wrong. In the end it just started to run rough, stalling, and lacking power. It cut out on me on a back road, going round a tight left hander. The steering went frightfuly heavy. Luckily nothing was coming the other way, as I would have hit them.
He sold it after it cut out on him in the same situation.
