Took the scoob to bedford today...

Great fun, but the brakes started to fade quite quickly.

What are the best choices for increasing efficiency and reducing fade.

I was thinking ..first go for castrol SRF brake fluid at the next service.

Then perhaps a better pad. (any suggestions?)

How about larger disks?? how much to spend and where should I buy from?

Plus, can I keep the gold callipers, or will they only fit on the standard disks.

What sort of fade? Pedal to the floor? Or a "wooden" pedal which you have to press harder and harder and the car won't stop?

If it's the latter, which is far more likely, then that really is fade. As I'm sure you know it's caused by the pad material getting too hot and a pad change is in order, Ferodo DS2500, Pagid RS4-2-1 or similar will probably solve this. Changing the brake fluid will have no effect on genuine brake fade so look at the pad change first.

The former which is often called fade when it isn't really, can be a symptom of brake fluid which is too hot or there is water in it which boils. Changing the brake fulid can solve this but Castrol SRF at £30 odd quid a litre is serious overkill on a road car. It does work well under extreme conditions but if you're getting brake fluid hot enough to need SRF on a road going Scoobie then there are other problems. So for the brake fulid, if it's more than a couple of years old change it for a decent DOT5.1 or one of the medium spec fluids like Castrol Response. If you're really keen go for a semi competition type, AP551 or similar, but be prepared to change it regularly as it takes in water from the air more readily. But don't expect a fluid change to cure fade.

i was on a track day...and it was definately fade...meaning the pedal went quite soft and i needed pushing harder.

I was looking at the 335mm brake kits from scooby shop.. too

Different pads wont help im afraid. The scoob std brakes just aren't up to the job on-track. New pagid or likewise pads will make it bite better but you will destroy discs and have bad brake judder quickly. You get the same judder with standard pads too when worked hard.

The scoobs and EVO's for that matter use large one piece disks. They retain too much heat when worked hard.

There are a couple of answers ....... number 1 buy an expensive big brake conversion ... number 2 buy a lightweight track orientated car

I got some seperate discs and bells for my STI from Godspeed along with some Ferodo Ds2500 pads. Never had any fade yet and because of the 2 piece design they dont warp as easily, this cost about £500 to do the fronts.
One thing I will be adding is braided hoses as when I tried a friends it really sharpened up the pedal feel

 

Subaru brakes are crap...........................Use your GT3 on track, problem solved.
