I've tried searching but drawn a blank, so can anyone remember a tread ~12 months, ago where a few of the posters ran warm up tests, giving details of time/temp/miles for cold morning start-ups...?

If anyone remembers this any pointers to finding it would be appreciated (sp?).

Nope, can't find it
But, my classic my99 turbo, with oil temp gauge, used to take around 10 mins to warm through on a mild morning, up to 80 degrees, driving on local roads, to work.
On the way home from work, straight onto motorway, would take 15+ mins up to same temp.

Most I ever saw on my temp gauge was 100 degrees in the alps, storming up the stelvio pass

I remember the thread...would be interested in reading again.

I normally wait for 9 miles in the winter before boost. But that's pretty much down the motorway and takes about 10 mins. Sticking to under 3k revs.......

at least I have fun the rest of the way!

Reading the summer thread it seems I could leave less time/miles.

Interesting thread this. I always give my scooby about 10 miles for its oil to warm up before using any boost and I dont set straight off from cold- I leave the car to stand usually until the water temp is up to normal to at least negate some of the "shock" for want of a better term to the car after its been sitting in the cold for a bit.

I'm genuinely surprised when I see people at meets gunning the cars straight from the off after they've been standing around in the cold for hours.

Just curious, does the Subaru manual mention anything about letting the car warm up before extending it? Its strange that they'd omit that when they do point to the importance of letting the car cool down after heavy driving before switching off.

Been checking temps recently and one of the things I've been looking at is how long the engine takes to get back to temp after 2 hours standing (from previously warmed up) at ~8deg ambient.

From ~ 28-35 deg. back to 80 deg. takes around 3 miles with water temp gauge normal at 1.2 miles.

Must add that temps were taken externally from various points around the block and averaged so not sure exactly how accurate this would translate to oil temp..!

All good stuff though..!

Just remember that the water will reach operating temperature far quicker than the oil and it is the oil temperatue that is important. At this time of year it might take 7 or 8 miles to reach 70 deg C and it may struggle to reach 80 deg, even after 20 miles on the coldest days with slush and ice.

 

My 05 does seem to warm up quite quickly. Other than different oil grade (I run Motul 300v 10w 40 BTW) and obviously ambient temp, why is it that newage cars seem to warm up quicker..?

Harvey, how would the outer casing of the oil pump rate as a point of reference..? (I'm aware that inside the sump is the ideal position)

If I keep the revs <3k with minimal or no boost the most my scoob seems to hit is 80c- 85c max regardless of the milage/time. Only goes above this when I start pushing..!

 

On exceptionally cold or frosty mornings I start mine and let it idle until the ecu drops the revs back down from 2k to 1-1.5k rpm's by itself. I then back out the drive and drive to work, keeping the rpm's below 3k until the engine temp says it's up to normal. This takes about 6 or 7 miles.

Then I have a quick blast every morning around the same roundabout and up a 1/2 mile stretch of road and hey presto, I'm at work. Fun's over.

 

OK, then who is concerned enough about warm up times to turn off their heater to aid quicker engine warm up???

...I bet someone here does . Or they probably will now I've mentioned it !

 

LOL My scooby gets pampered enough- it doesn't get off the drive till the revs have settled at normal idle speed and the water temp is normal then it gets 10 miles before it goes over 2500rpm....please say I don't have to freeze too!!!!

NS04, what a waste of petrol! the best way to warm a car up is to drive it, not let it idle on your driveway! Then, 10 miles @ 2500! wtf! That car must be toasty by then

Surely the best way is to take it easy (ie <3k off boost) until the oil temp is ~70c then gradually build revs and boost over next few miles..?

I've said this before, if you warmed up and cooled down to the excess that some suggest you'd never be able to use any boost FFS..!

As for not using the heater, I've considered it if that counts..?

Agreed about driving a car being the best way of warming it up, but I do that too! See Oilman's posts re. oil in the winter. Also, see Harveys post about just how long oil can take to warm up this time of year! Quite a shocker!

I agree, I do treat my car with kit gloves though!

I used to start my my00 up in the winter mornings, then lock the car with my spare set and go back into my house to finish breakfast and have a 2nd cuppa tea.

Sadly my my04 won't let me lock the doors with the spare set of keys when the engine is running ? Anyone got any ideas ? Anyone got the codes for the thatcham alarm on my04 wrx ppp ? I want to turn on auto door locking ya see.

jods, you need to find the book that came with your alarm. I've got a my03 sti, and just been through my alarm book. Although it states you can arm the system and lock the doors with the key in the ignition, it doesn't tell you how to do it . Says you have to get a subaru dealer to do it, although someone on here will know how.

Alternatively mate, just leave your car with the keys in the ignitinon BUT with a Thatcham cat 3 and Sold secure steering lock on it (e.g. Disclock)!! It won't be going anywhere then! I'd only advocate this if you can see the car out of a window though cause obviously if someone can still get in the car they can do some damage and pop the bonnet etc...

Also not recommended if you live anywhere in Brum!!

BTW don't leave the ley for the steering lock on the same keyring as the keys for the car for obvious reasons!

 

I understand why you have to let the car warm up, but surely, the hotter the oil gets (say 80 degrees +), the higher the chance of detonation??

 

Right, today from a cold start (9deg. ambient):

2 miles water temp showing normal
3 miles block surface temp ave. @ 73deg
4 miles block surface temp ave. @ 78deg

Drove for a furtur 6 miles (total 10 miles) with a couple of squirts of boost at around 8 miles and block surface temp ave. @ 83deg. +/- 2deg.

Based on this I start using some boost at around 4.5 to 5 miles unless the ambient is significantly lower (< 5deg) then maybe 8 miles (need to re-test at these temps).

 

Surely, a big factor in 'warm-up' should be 'the time elapsed since starting engine', not mileage - although driving conditions, density of traffic etc. are further complicating factors.
