After much research, advice, many test drives and sleepless nights I have finally bought an Evo VI. I've been driving this for a few days now and yesterday a thought came to me which I can't quite explain. How can a car this fast be legal? After all, the government provide laws and legislation to protect us and for the common good - drugs are illegal 'cos they might kill you, helmets are enforced so we survive a motorbike crash, etc, etc..

How can a car that can catapult its driver to 60 mph in approx 4 seconds be legal, I find it hard to seriously justify needing a car to perform to this extent, nobody is ever in that much of a hurry. Sorry if this post is confusing, but after experiencing the roller coaster like performance of my car I find it hard to see how a car like this can be legal. I'm not saying it should be illegal, but how can a government that bans so many other things that should be subject to freedom of choice, allow us to drive such extreme transportation?

Am I talking rubbish?

Martin

Ignore JohnF - I think he is still wound up by certain other muppets - sorry members of this board.

If you drive like a nutter on the road, then you are going to end up killing yourself or someone else - regardless of what you drive.

Enjoy your car and stop worrying

Chris

[I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick here ladies..

I'm not saying that EVO/Scoobie type cars should be illegal, but I find it so astonishing that potentially lethal vehicles (motorbikes included) are legal when so many things things that should also be down to freedom of choice, are illegal.

Don't worry, I'm not going soft.

Martin

Anything can be deadly if used recklessly - even a far lesser car than an Evo 6.

Stop philosophising and enjoy driving your car.

Martin, just kidding.

You have to realize that every car can get to stupid speeds in built op areas in a matter of seconds.

You can also drown your neighbour in your garden pond, or hit the mailman on the head with a freezer (if you're strong that is)

It's all about appropriate use I'd say.

I agree with everything said so far, but why else would someone buy an extremely fast car other than to go fast?

Acording to EVO mag, only 2 production cars have a higher power/weight. McLaren F1 and Caterham R500. I can match the R500 on track, dunno about the Macca

Told you your Evo is slow LOL

Think Trackday for appropriate use.

I mean, I even learned in what ways you can abuse a straw today. Yuk.

"Hello officer, no I never drive fast in my Evo, the only reason I bought it was so that I could overtake safely and stop quickly. Go fast? Me? Never!"

John,
I'll soon be a member of the 400+bhp per tonne club...

In fact, by the end of this week, beginning of next - fingers crossed!

According to statistics, a lot more people die in normal cars than in fast cars....

It all depends on your views, do you want a free-for-all society where people can do what they want (capitalism bordering on anarchy) or one where the state controls every aspect of your life (socialism)?

Knives are dangerous. Electricity is dangerous. Gas is dangerous. Hell, water is dangerous if you inhale it!

How fast is fast enough? 0-60 in 6 seconds? 12 seconds? Nothing over 20mph? My Impreza is the safest car for overtaking I've ever owned. Tractors and milk floats can be dismissed in the blink of an eye.

Once they've banned fast cars, how about banning fast computers (just in case you get one fast enough to break government-only approved encryption)? Or intelligent children (anyone with an IQ over a certain level might be dangerous, so they get used as fertiliser)?

Speed doesn't kill, collisions do. Stopping cars hitting each other or pedestrians is what the govt. should be pursuing, not revenue-driven attempts to slow them down.

But we've been here before. Shame really, as I don't think you've asked a muppet question....

Thanks.. I was sure I wasn't going mad. Just a basic observation really, nothing more. Then again, Evo's are slow aren't they..
